how much ice

how much ice do u guys usually prefer before using your shanty? I just got me a shanty and was wondering how much ice it takes to be safe using one.......thanks josh

Depends on the weight, but I wouldn't do a shanty with any less than 3 solid inches of ice.  When I say solid I mean 3 inches consistantly everywhere not 3 inches here and 1 inch over there.  Just one mans opions.

It'll displace water just like a boat..... a sinking boat you can't see out of.   ;) I think 3 is a good base as well

Four is a lot to drill through.  Actually if you broke through after a couple fo good turns of the old auger you'd prolly poop.  I would.  Three never LOOKS like enough.

Hell I fell thur with damn near a foot thick last year
 Seeings how someone spudded a spearin hole the night before. went thru to my A$$......would've stayed except for the water in my boots
