Eskimo 33cc maintenance question
« on: Jan 11, 2014, 11:16 AM »
Hey Everyone.  I've owned an Eskimo Stingray auger since Feb. 2011.  The first summer I stored it I had a problem the next year with it not turning.  Took it into Lamberts and the guy who called me said there was ice in the gearbox.  Then when I went to pick it up they said nothing was wrong with it.  Oh well, at least it worked.  Worked great last year after that and this year was a bit slow.  Just did a tune up today (air filter, fuel filter, and spark plug) and runs great again.  Also I broke the pull cord last time out and replaced that today (bought the whole part), but that was probably just me not knowing my own strength on the pull.  ::)

Anyway, here's my question.  Part of the maintenance in the manual is to pull apart the gearbox and check that the gears are topped up with grease.  After that first year when it wouldn't turn I tried to open the gear box and it was stuck tight.  So I was just wondering if there's a trick to cracking the gear box and how often you all check the grease in there?

This also just highlights the importance of maintaining your equipment.  Feel free to tell your other auger maintenance tips/stories.  Thanks.

Hi there,

I got the Eskimo Z71.  I have had it since 2009?  I've stored it over the summer with or without fuel.  I replaced the spark plug just the other day but haven't fired it up yet.  Was planning on doing the air filter (bought one of those Eskimo tuneup kits) but haven't gotten around to that yet.  I've been running AmsOil Saber with SeaFoam right from the get go.  If memory serves me right I ran 80:1 the first gallon during break in and then 100:1 ever since.
