I've been reading about these ugly fish in magazines and here on iceshanty for the last couple years and thought I might give it a try.  Any fish that reportedly tastes like Lobster I have to try for myself.  SDGFP shows that they are only in the Missouri River system but I found a SDSU Web Page (http://wfs.sdstate.edu/sdgap/fish/burbot.htm) that indicates they might be in other areas.  I'm thinking I might have to make a trip to Pierre this winter to give it a shot but I don't have a clue what area of Oahe is best.  I'd rather try to stay closer to Rapid City then not (Gotta love these gas prices).

So, Does anybody know where a guy can fish for Burbot, West River?

Thanks!

I'm new to this so bear with me until I get it all figured out. It has been my experence that the Ling cod sorta find you instead of you finding them. I have caught them all through the Missouri river system in south dakota. they are an ugly critter for sure. Skin them like a snake. I have not heard of them in Pactola. But they might be there.

I catch them in the Mobridge area while fishing for Walleye. They are ugly!! I like to clean em with my Super Blackeagle 31/2 inch. I've never eaten one, but I hear they are good. I just don't like it when they try to wrap around my arm.

why would someone intentionally try to catch them? ??? ??? :o

Not enough ice or time... not necessarily in that order.

Although I've never been able to fish for them, I've read hear on IS that they are very, very tasty.  I would imagine they probably put up a decent fight too for that matter.... I'd love to be able to fish for them exclusively sometime out on the ice!!!

They give me a little more practice with my Super Black Eagle. Easiest way I have found to skin and gut them at the same time.

I have never caught one intentionally. I guess they are good to eat,but I'll stick with walleye, perch, and other panfish. I watched a video on this forum about how to clean them and it looks like too much of a pain for an ornery old coot like me.

Well back on subject- I suppose I am in no danger of catching one over here in the west?

Unless you're fishing the Mighty 'Mo it sounds unlikely!
