Ice fishing on Lake of the Woods
« on: Nov 08, 2005, 10:42 PM »
For all of you that fish Lake of the Woods I was wondering do you ever rent sleeper shacks up there or do you rent a regular shack and go out there everyday.  If you have done both what do you believe is the best and where would you suggest staying.  Last year we stayed at a hotel and took our portables out there, but this year we would like to get a permanent shack out there.  Just looking for some ideas from others who have been up there!

Thanks

If you dont mind the portables I think this is the best way to go, you can always stay mobile if you have trouble, fish by where they put out the sleepers. If you get a sleeper and you are not on fish its a b***h to move if all the houses are full. they will move you but then you are not fishing for a few hours. Just a thought. If you do want to do a sleeper. I have had fabulous luck out of Zipple Bay Resort. My buddy has a trailer right on Zipple so we just buy the road pass and go out but we have had fabulous luck. limit every time of decent fish... Sorry I donot have contact info

Wheelers Point offers the best bang for your buck and if ya go tell Paul (the really big guide) that the guys with the white rod boxes sent ya!  You cant go wrong with John and the crew at Wheelers!

Long Point Resort is a nice family run outfit that has treated us well for about 12 years.  They are a small  no frills operation without bar or restaurant facilities so you have to bring a little grub and whiskey if so desired.  They knew us by name after just a couple years and we only go up once a season.

I am heading out to Wigwam resort this winter - Anyone fish out of this resort before?  This will be our first trip to LOTW, after many trips to Winnie and Mille Lacs.  Any suggestions for lures/bait for this area?  We are going in January -anyone have idea of size or quantity of eyes/saugers we can realistically expect to catch per day?

Thanks for any info!

Here is the scoop on LOW.  Gold jigs about 2-10" off bottom is the general rule, but dont be afraid to try a glow demon and fish close to the bottom but be ready to bring it up if you see something on your vex.  Ive landed multiple fish in the 29-31" range by using the glow demons and mark a fish up 3 feet off bottom, raise it up kinda quick to there level and then slowly lift 6-12" aboe them and whammo.  Wigwam is a great place to stay as it is party central at the end of the road!  If the crowd is not to your liking then take the short block walk back to Wheelers Point (the blue resort right before wigwam)  they have a new bar and lounge.

Thanks for the info
-- I know it all depends on the weather, fish attitude, etc.., but on average, is it usually a pretty consistant bite?  I would assume you would catch more fish at dawn/dusk, but do guys catch fish out there all day?  (Or should we just plan to bring a deck of cards and twice as much Leinie's as usual?  :)   )...  Looks like I will have to make sure I'm stocked up on gold jigs and glow demons.

Thanks!
