Cigarette power outlet charger
« on: Dec 27, 2010, 08:00 PM »
I'm looking for a car charger for my fishfinder battery (12v) .  Anyone have a good charging unit for theirs? I thought they would be easy to find but they have been surprisingly tough to find.

I will be spending a few days later this season in a cabin without electricity.  I have to charge my batteries from my truck.

How about just using an inverter and plug your ac charger into that?  A small inverter shouldn't cost much.

Both ideas will work but the inverter seems to be a better idea if for no other reason a small inverter is always handy to have.
If your not apposed to shopping at Wally World here's a link to inverter that should work for you.

Clam sells exactly what you're looking for.  I picked one up for 3.99 at Gander Moutain....

the reason you dont want to hook it directly to the cigarette light  is the charging rate   you want to do the small batteries slowly you can charge it via the cigarette lighter  but ya have to watch it!    1o amps into a 8 ah battery  can fry it   all ya want is 500 ma into it  max 1 amp and thats kinda high

Thats exactly what Im looking for, a charging unit that plugs into the power outlet of my truck.  Thanks guys I didn't know these small inverters were so cheap.  I only say the units that cost $100+  They are great for a lot of things, charging batteries, powering aerators etc.

I found an item that has a lighter socket plug on both ends and a box inline to vary the charge rate. It is for jumping a vehicle with a dead battery. It acts like a charger rather than a jumper. You have to wait about 1/2 hour before even trying to start the dead car. It's in my garage, I'll  look at it later and see if I can dig you up a link to the product. I bought it for recharging my trolling motor batteries for when I am on an extended fishing trip. I do not see why it would not work for your application too.

It is similar to this $25.00 unit but was less expensive. Cut the plug off the outlet end if needed and put whatever terminals you need from Radio Shack or similar store. It may still be a little too powerful for a 7-9AH battery though.

Semi-old thread, I know, but TTT for anyone interested.

I found my receipt and had to search a bit online but I found the same thing only cheaper than when I bought mine. Take a look at this:

Suggestion. Do not cut the plug off. Buy a female socket with wire and put alligator clips on that and plug it onto the dead end of the charger for use charging your 12 volt 7, 9, 12, etc AH batteries. I got mine for my deep cell marine battery but will soon try it on my 9AH

I'm still quite leary about sending 100 amps to a little 7-9 AH battery.  That'll seem like 2-3 minutes of charge.

If I'm going to go out for a long time, I would just get a deep cycle marine battery.  Then hook up some alligator clips to it and run to my flasher.  Of course I wont be mobile.
