Swivels on Ice fishing lines
« on: Dec 25, 2013, 07:06 PM »
Hey guys

I'm sorry if this may sound like a stupid question. But do you guys put swivels on your tip-up leaders (connecting fluorocarbon to the hook)? Or do you tie the hook straight to the line? I've done it both ways and I don't seem to notice a difference. But I was thinking that some fish may see the swivel on the line.

Thanks again! And Merry Christmas to everyone! I got a Indian Hills  Nor-Easter and I'm looking to try it out soon!

Ben

We should make it clear there are swivels and then there are snap swivels, Most of the time I use just swivels.

Also use a spro or sampo or it's about useless anyway

You can tie a double clinch knot ,nail knot , blood knot if you like cuts down on weight I still use a small swivel  I  like to cut off the snap end if I'm low on barrels .

I would prefer that but with live bait it's big trouble

Jigs such as bucktails I never use swivels. Sweedish pimples and similar vertical type jigs I do.

Polamar knot is good with jigs more freedom of motion , and it will tie directly to the jig no swiv.

i use swivels so i can switch between steel leaders and my trout setup.  The Nor-Easter is an awesome setup, used it last year and it is a lot of fun, picking up another one this week.

Barrel swivel between main line and leader to decrease line twist from the bait when it "freaks out" from a predator attack.

Modified cinch know works for me.

As with most others:

ice line to leader = barrel swivel

leader to hook = direct knot (palomar or improved cinch)

Like others I run a small barrell swivel between my main line and leader. I never use a snap swivel, if im changing a lure or a hook; I tie a new knot every time. If im jigging and want to change leaders and not use a barrell swivel I use a nail or double surgeons knot to connect them.

Because my dexterity decreases with the lower temps, I actually have snap swivels on my ice lines. I prepare a whole bunch of leaders (approximately the same length) so that if I lose a hook or weight or the line gets chewed up too much, I can just swap the whole thing out in 10 seconds.

Then at home I just fix / create new leaders.

(Somewhat unrelated but I frequently find myself taking a risk with the leaders, and I keep even pretty beat up ones on the line - only to complain profusely when the line gets cut  ;D )
