Elite 5x battery eating monster
« on: Dec 19, 2013, 08:25 PM »
Hay electronic people I'm having trouble with my elite 5x draining battery's on and off the ice. Last season I was going though 2 to 3 9ah battery's in a days fish'n. so this year made a $100 motorcycle battery purchase and used it one time one the ice and all was good all day. never disconnected the battery and checked it 3 days later in the garage and its down to 8.7 volts. Any help or anyone have the same problem?

If it has GPS then the GPS modual is always drawing power even when off, always charge after each use and disconect the ground at least between uses...

I have an Elite 5 ice machine (has the gps).  The 5x doesn't have GPS unless you added externally so that shouldn't be the issue.  I had charged mine a couple months before first ice, left everything hooked up, and pulled it out 2 months later and it was still fully charged.  I am wondering if you have a poor connection on/in your machine that might be draining the battery?

my elite 5 lasts all day on the stock (7a) battery and still has plenty of juice left...sounds like something is wrong with yours.

Just got back from having an amp test done and my finder pulls10ma off and 1 amp will running that's alot of juice. Thinking that it is the ice transducer but don't want to take the one out of the boat. So anymore thoughtsand thanks for the help.

Your unit shouldn't be pulling any amps when its off. Maybe try disconnecting power cable from back of your unit and ohm out the positive and negative wire to see if there is a short within that cable.  In my college computer electronic training, we learned about something called a "crowbar circuit." Crowbar circuit protects computer chips from becoming fried when there is a short or too much voltage is applied. Not sure if Elite 5x uses this circuit or not. What this circuit does is direct excess voltage to ground instead of thru voltage sensitive chips. When this happens it should blow main fuse on power wire, but I have experienced that if too much voltage is applied; the diode in this circuit can burn up and continue to allow power to drain thru ground.
Always best to recharge your battery immediately after each use and to disconnect power wires.  I like have voltage overlay data displayed on the fishfinder screen to watch battery level when fishing. Also, having display light on high draws battery power. Hope this info helps you!

The 10mah draw when off is normal, its the unit ghost drawing to save your settings and what not. 10 mah is so little that it could sit for a year and not be dead. Probably 2 years with a motorcycle battery.

The 1ah working seems pretty high. The elite 5 is 750mah draw, so it is drawing quite a bit more than it should.

Something is wrong.

Yes a 1 amp draw seems quite high.
My Humminbird 597 draws 615 mA and that is with GPS & higher wattage for the depthfinder.
