Nils Auger sizes
« on: Dec 13, 2013, 03:15 PM »
Greetings all,

First time OP.  Thanks for having me.

So I'm just getting into hardwater fishing and thanks to everyone's raving reviews on the Nils hand augers, I'm sold.  I want one really bad.

My only problem is I cannot decide which diameter I should get, 6" or 8".

I've even read other people's posts on this exact same topic and am still having a tough time convincing myself one way or the other.  Sounds like there's really no wrong answer, but maybe you guys can help me based on my fishing habits.

6" is cheaper, quicker, and arguably less work.

8" would be my preferred size, but is a bit more spendy, and arguably more work.

Can anyone comment here on the so-called extra work/time involved with removing roughly double the ice with the Nils 8" in specific comparison to the Nils 6"?  Or is it pretty negligible?

I'm not going to be drilling a ton of holes, most of my fishing buddies have power augers so really the only time I'd use it would be on my own.  There's likely no fish that I would catch that wouldn't fit up a 6" hole, but there's a possibility of using a vexlar in the same hole with the 8".  Minnesnowta fish: Sunnies, Crappies, Walleye, Northern...and whatever else may come along.

Another consideration is that the 6" hole may quickly become 5" then 4" as they start to refreeze....

Any comments or experiences are welcomed.  Thanks everyone.

*edit* oh whoops i totally missed the "augers" section of the equipment forum.... sorry to the mod

Get the 8.  IF you get the 6 you will just want to upgrade to the 8.  Also when the time comes you can upgrade to the powerhead.  That or just save more money and get a power auger.  Just my 2 cents.

Well i have both and find myself using the 6" the most. i will use the 8" when i go for lake trout or when i am setting tip ups for pike. one of the biggest reasons i like using the 6" over the 8" is when you lose that nice crappie or big gill right at the hole the fish has a harder time turning in the hole to swim away when using a 6". just something else to consider. so my vote is for the 6" if you are gonna be doing alot of fishing for panfish and moving. if u are more of a tip for walleye and pike kind of guy go with the 8"

I say if you are 90% Panfish and 10% Pike/Walleye then stay 6"

I say if you are 10% Panfish and 90% Pike/Walleye then go 8"

I say if 50% / 50% then go 8" for Early & Late Ice..... Make sure to go with Buddies with Power Augers in MID Ice :)

I fished 8" for 25 years.  Just few days ago a buddy wanted to go and since too thin ice for ATV we took his 6" SM Hand Auger!  I was lucky not to loose some Pike because it took me about twice the effort and time to get them turned upwards (I do not GAFF anyfish).

I had no problem getting 30" pike through the 6" hole... the problem was getting them turned upwards.  Seems with 6" hole I had to get them between 50 deree to 90 degree.  Unlike with the 8" hole I can get them 30 degree to 45 degree turned up and onto the ice.

My 3 cents for you.  Bless

I woluld get the 8", I was debating between the 6" and 8" when I purchased mine. Went for the 8" and don't regret it.

I have the 8" and it works well, I like the larger diameter hole for my electronics and Macs.  If I wasn't so lazy and explored a bit more I would probably get a 6".

I have a Nils six because I'm on foot and conserve weight if I can.  No problem landing a 6-8lb lakers through a 6" hole last season. Some bigger or different fish might be a problem, but you know the lakes that have fish that big. This auger is light, the fastest and just awesome, best brand by far. I have the normal hand one and then i got a deal on the hand/cordless drill model. It's great because you always have the option of using it in hand mode. Last season I drilled holes with a Milwaukee M18 drill on low and you can drill 20-30 holes in 16" ice per battery. The speed is unbelievable and it cleans the hole after.

The photo in my profile is a 6" hand nils and an 7-8lb lake trout with some smaller ones.

If your decide on a  6" you might consider getting the Nils Convertible.  You'll have the hand auger and can put a 18 volt drill with 1/2" chuck on it.

Overwhelming responses.  Thanks Everyone!

Good reasons both ways.  I think it's roughly 3 votes each way with one guy chiming in having both...   I suppose I should just get both.....

I'd have to say that my fishing habits probably support getting the 6" but I don't want to regret not having a bit larger hole.

Can you drill holes next to each other or slightly overlapping pretty easily should you need extra 'girth'?

I drill two holes next to each other and open the space between with a spud bar.
