Time on the ice
« on: Dec 03, 2005, 09:45 PM »
I'm just curious, once the ice is safe how much time in the average week does everyone spend on the ice?

I typically have time away from work come winter so I spend between 20-30 hours on the ice per week.  Sometimes a little more if the warden gives me a day off on the weekend :)

Always spend Christmas fishing in gulf at Corpus Texas and then back by Jan 5th for ice and serious fishing. Start out slow til blood thickens at 3-4 hrs a day and then build from there as sensory system slowly freezes and shuts down over the winter and Queen gets nastier from cabin fever.
Good thing about prisons- they reduce the potential number of fisherman on the ice!

Every chance I get ... wife said to me the other day ... you probably wont be heading up to Sodus much this year with the cost of gas... might be cheaper to go every other weekend and just rent a room and stay over night... got to love the way this woman thinks.. Yea I know ... She might be getting a boyfriend in on the weekends I'm gone .. god bless him as long as i can ice fish. ;)
Where is the ice !!!!

Glad to see that I'm not the only guy with icewater in his veins.  You guys are a
bunch of hardcores.  I'm probably out there 30 hours a week when they are biting.
Can't wait for first ice.
Many men go fishing their entire lives without knowing it's not fish they are after.

We try to get out every weekend as a group.  I get to sneak out on my own during the week though because I work a 24 hour shift, with the next three days off.  I have a side job, but set my own schedule, so I try to get out when ever I am not working that.  Unfortunately, my work load picks up in Jan and Feb. on the side job, but I still work at least one extra day a week in.
Fish may be stupid but I've never seen a perch sitting in a boat with a second degree sun burn trying to catch a man.

When safe ice hits central IL. i usually get on at least a half hr. before sunrise & stay til an hr. or 2 after sunset, if its a tuff bite day. We,re all good fishermen twice a day, when the sun is in the trees. I take 3-5 wks. of vacation just to icefish & try to go every day, sometimes twice a day if I stay close to home, if its a roadtrip i,m there from dark to dark.

usually at least sat, but usually sun as well. Season usually runs from late november through mid april if I so choose. Of course, once my local ponds freeze (mid-late dec) I fish everyday afterschool I'm not busy, meaning not fri, not thur, and not tuesday all the way through until late feb until baseball season starts. Also during my winter break (which is around two weeks) I spend tons of time on the ice, probably around 10 days this time it looks like. my spring break is also in mid march and I will spend 3 extra days on the ice then most likely looking for late ice macks at big blue. Occaisionally I will sneak away from icefishing to catch some big ole winter rainbows and cutbows on the colorado river; they really stack up in the deep holes and are easy to catch since almost noone fishes for them.
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.

I am one of the lucky ones that has my time off in mid week. That equates to a lot less pressure than having to fish on the week ends. Also a lot of the old timers fish mon thru fri and if you can get em talking you can gain a wealth of knowledge.

Until pheasant season closes Dec 31, I ice fish, depending on safe conditions, every Sat. and hunt Sun. or vice-versa. I usually have my deer by then, so I don't have to worry about that. After that, it's both Sat and Sun every week until ice-out; about 12-16 hrs per week. I have absolutely no time to ice fish during the week. I've tried it, and can't get to the lake before dark. I also go to Florida every christmas to see family and to log in some saltwater fly fishing. It always helps to get some really good ice fishing in just before the trip (the sooner and colder the better,) to have something to think about while I'm casting streamers in warm turqoise water to cruising tarpon snook and reds. It almost makes me wish I were back home ice fishing.
