Waxie/Spike Storage
« on: Nov 20, 2013, 09:48 PM »
I'm going to order a 1000 count next week I think. I was wondering how y'all keep them alive? I have a couple "refrigerator safe" bait pucks, but not nearly enough to store a thousand spikes.
keep yer stick on the ice.

You could talk to the company you are getting them from, and ask what they recommend. Or just store them in the package they come in.

If you know anyone who works at a hospital or clinic, you could ask them if you could have one of the shipping containers that cooled vaccines and antibiotics come in.  My wife is an RN at a clinic here, and she brings home styrafoam boxes about the size of shoe boxes and I use one to store my 1000.  I poke a couple of holes through the top with a 1/8 drill bit to allow for a little air flow.
She said they usually just throw the containers away...

I keep mine in a regular container on a window sill that gets little light.  Even crack the window just a hair to keep it cool enough.  I have kept waxies for months, literally.

i have always just kept them in the ziplock bag that they come in.  Throw it in the fridge and load your pucks up as needed.  I have never had a problem with them staying alive that way.

X2 on the ziplock bags. I bought a couple thousand last March,  and was able to keep them alive and use them throughout the summer. I even caught my first fish of this ice season on them.

Someone should tell the good people at Walmart about keeping waxies 40-45 degrees. I bought some there tonight in a pinch because we are heading out in the morning after walleyes but wanted some waxies in case we run into a school of perch. Every one of them is dead and frozen. Hopefully I can still skewer them on a hook in the morning.
