New to using tip ups

What are good lures for perch? Or should I be using a hook and live bait?

You still talking about tip ups or using a jigging stick? For using tip ups, I'd use live bait. Medium shiners are a good start. Jigging I'd use a swedish pimple or some lil bibbits with maggots on it.

Maybe something smaller than mediums if you're going for perch on tip ups

I have jigging lures for my pole. I was just asking about tip ups, knowing that they work a little bit differently. I was thinking about small shiners.

We've caught perch on tip-ups with everything from perch bait (small shiners) to pike bait (heavy medium shiners).  I would stick with the perch bait for more action, but you may end up catching lots of small ones.  The ones that bite the pike bait are always 12"+!

Yeah.  Perch bait can be alot of fun cause you can get a good amount of flags going off. Just make sure you don't run out ;D

Make sure you use perch size hooks too! Fishing was slow part of the day last weekend, so I changed all my pike rigs over to perch size hooks and perch size flatheads.  I was endlessly chasing flags when the bite turned on at 3:30 p.m.  Was fun for about 20 minutes, the. I just fished a jig.  A bunch of tip ups rigged for perch wouldbe a blast for kids.

my opinion is if you want to fish with tip ups for perch, use fatheads for bait, small to med/small,(usually tiny to begin with). fish in 40 foot of water and fish it deep to start. then work your way up from the bottom until you find them. then as you would with a jig pole follow the school with your tip ups if you feel like moving them around or leave them be, I usually have them come back for rounds 2 and 3 through out the day.
Ice, Beer, Tip-ups...can it get any better? Oh yeah... My wife stayed home :)
