Which Ice Hut
« on: Dec 06, 2013, 01:43 PM »
Im thinking about selling my quickflip 2 and get a popup. what are your guys thoughts on eskimo vs. Clam. Read a lot of mixed reviews about both. Can I special order them through sportsmans warehouse or bobwards in Missoula. Was looking for the fatfish 949 but nobody has it. I guess ebay would be my best guess. What are your guys opinions.

We bought three Clams popups for a guiding operation and had nothing but problems from day one. Zippers, poles, grommets, poor sewing. Sent them back ASAP and went to Sportsman's for Eskimo's and had no issues to speak of in two years of use. (we did have to reinforce some top grommets actually but that was with being used several times a week) Just my two cents given the cost is about the same. That said I have not used Clam for anything since so they may have got it together with their Chinese manufacturers...I assume. ::)

Thanks for the advice. seems like eskimo is the way to go. You guide ice fishing trips? Where do you go and how much would it be. Great xmas gift idea.

I bought an ESKIMO Quickfish 4 on Ebay a month ago for $160 out of MN. It is a bit on the bigger side but I think it will work well. Trying it out for the first time tomorrow.

I bought an Eskimo quick fish 6 last year and I really like it, lots of room but....hard to be mobile when there are no fish under you. Looking at a three seater clam style for this season.

We are still guiding icefishing.  Mostly Canyon Ferry, Causeway, and Helena Valley.  We may do a Peck Run this year too.    The website is currently in maintenance.  But we are officially Montana Walleye Hunters and Wild West Flyfishing.

I went cheap and bought a killzone 3 years ago because Jim F had good luck with his the season before. Now he is going on 4 seasons with his and this will be my 3rd season with mine. So far they have worked great and we both ice fish a lot so they get a lot of use. I am happy with mine and if it hadn't lasted and performed well I would not give it a good review as I am really critical of how gear performs for me. I would buy it again but I do not ho wit compares to any of the other big name brand popups. If mine fails within the first five years I'll try another brand. If it lasts longer than five years I would simply buy another one when this one finally gives out in some way that I can't repair.

Good to know have always wanted to give killzone a shot... for the money it could be the best buy around

I have the Eskimo Fatfish 949i and absolutely love it. I had a Clam (suit case style) for years but it didn't like the wind very well. The Fatfish does just fine in the wind.
The worse day fishing is still better than the best day working!
