Ponds along I-65
« on: Jan 25, 2015, 09:51 AM »
Had to go to Fishers yesterday (Sat) to celebrate Grandson's Birthday. Saw two guys on pond off 95th in Merrillville. Only fishermen I saw the entire trip to Indy and back. Some of the ponds from Lafayette on south didn't look to inviting!

Still have 6 to 7 inches of ice  with about 4 clear ice on some ponds around Lafayette. The edges are holding up too. Not sure with the rain was planning on heading to a buddies 5 acre lake this afternoon. Going with a buddy no worries there. Have a floater suit, ice picks and have been ice fishing consistently since I was 15 I am the big 40 now. If I have a bad feeling I wont be getting on it. Ice Fishing "Season"  for me is like having buck fever for a deer hunter. If I see someone on the ice and I can't be out there it just about kills me. No fish is worth dying for thats for sure. Be safe out there everyone!

Checked a pond due east of Lafayette about 20 min yesterday afternoon and edge was ok but about 15 ft out, spud went right through!!!  The three of eased back and waiting for a better day.  Where we were fishing looked pretty sketchy from the bank and that's on about 14 ft of water.  It was warm but not warm enough for a swim!  Be safe, we are looking to head farther north later in the week!

I fished Knopp Lake east of Lafayette this AM. 5" of hard ice, bottom 3 were clear. Slick as snot in the rain!  Caught a half dozen keepers and as many dinks. Left about noon as the snow started.

Smart to use your head!
I went in on barrow pit 20+ years ago by myself! Not smart. Was in 1 1/2 hrs. Saved by two kind soles who heard me yelling.
Stay safe!

Good 4" of clear ice and a total of 6" on my buddies pond in North Central Indiana. Caught about 35 and kept 16 nice gills and crappie. The crappie were turning on around 7 this evening but I really had to get home. Thank god for my wife. Our kids both have chest infections and she knew I needed some ice time and told me to be safe and have fun. Didn't think the fish would turn on having a bit of a nor'easter but the but was hot a heavy from about 5 on. Life is good. Sometimes life is really good!
