Auger slippage: please advise
« on: Dec 06, 2013, 09:09 PM »
Hi guys,
A friend and I did some exploring on a shallow wilderness lake this afternoon. Wednesday's light rain and then the sharp drop in temps turned the ice ultra slick (5-6" thick and totally clear) and my 6" Nils wouldn't cut worth a d***. Given the quality of the ice there seemed virtually no friction and it just spun and shaved a little. By applying some pressure and turnin slowly I could eventually get the blade to bite for the last 2". Anyone ever have this issue? Is there a solution?

You either need new blades or you need to get the blades on your auger sharpened.

If the blade was re-sharpened the angle might have changed which causes the blade to slide without catching the ice. Either a professional sharpening or new blades will fix that right up.

I'll get ahold of Sharp Nils, thanks for the tip, but the auger cut fine on last ice in April and has been stored with the guard on and hung on a hook since spring which is why I wondered about the quality of the ice. Then again the blades have punched a lot of holes in the last 2yrs so they probably need a sharpening anyway.

could the auger tip been banged for some reason, the flues that the blades attach to might have been bent changing the angles also.

not sure how they are built, but one of my strikemaster lazers had loose bolts new and did the same thing
