What is a good line to use on your jigging pole. I keep having problems with it when I drop it in the water it always seems to all come off at onc.  Any tips would be great

It doesn't happen much with braided lines. But recommend using either a mono or florocarbon leader when using braid.

If you want to get rid of the problem all together, switch to bait casting reels. That's all I have used for years.

Houligan:

Do you use bait casters for ice fishing as well as open water fishing?  If so, what kind and model do you use for ice fishing?  Around here you don't see a lot of anglers using bait casting reels for open water, let alone ice fishing.

Hey grip....I was having the same issue and talked with a few people that are a lot more into hardwater than I am.  They suggested that I use micro ice line and instead of free spooling my spinning ice reel, just back reel the bait or jig to the depth you want.  Since I started doing that I haven't had the problems and I have actually caught several fish that have hit while setting up.
I hope this helps.

ClearCreek,
I use a bait caster for everything I can over a spinning reel on hard and soft water and have done so all my life. Actually my first reel was a bait caster. Ice fishing all I use is bait casting. I will use a spinning setup if casting really small baits or if the wind just gives me too much trouble on casting. Trolling there is no other way to go in my opinion.

I generally use high end reels but have tried this year a really smooth basspro shop inexpensive casting reel for ice fishing. Figured had to try it and really like the smoothness. Went to order another and they are out of stock. I would not use it on soft water due to the number of casts I make and have learned not to use the cheep stuff, it wears out too fast. If I think of it I will get the make and model of this one. Right now its loaded in the truck for Keyhole in the morning.

Matching the right setup on casting reels to the right bait in my opinion will help increase fish catches due to presentation and the retrieve is smoother over spinning tackle. Bottom line there is absolutely no line twist or spooling off when engaging the bail as in spinning tackle.

Cheers!

I definitely like casting reels for certain applications like trolling, but if you leave a spool of line on any reel long enough... it will develop some twist....casting or spinning.  I like to change out the line after awhile...only real fix for this problem.  Some guys scoff at changing line unless its every couple of years... that is how you get some really bad, old, twisted line... I try to change mine bare minimum a couple times a year.

Depends on how you rig your baits. Using good swivels help tremendously coupled with how you fish a certain bait. Trolling to fast for any bait can twist line. If you don't put twists in it you won't have any. I'm talking line twist, drop your bait to the ice or ground, when slack, drop the rod tip toward the bait, does the line automatically twist in a loop? If I see this I am doing something wrong.

A good braided line more than likely will not need to be changed a few times a year.

Probably is a good idea to change any line when its bad.

I use a lot of fireline crystal in the summer months.  Have used it ice fishing a fair bit as well.  I have been really liking P-line copolomar in the 6# version for perch, trout and walleye.  Seems plenty strong enough and I always use a swivel unless I am using a super small jig and want more action.

As for falling off the spool, I have always seen that happen when there is too much line on the spool.

I use fireline crystal both hard and soft water.  I always use a high quality swivel with flourocarbon leaders.  Spool fullness has got to be considered, as well as direction taking line off bulk spool.....

I don't use braid, I used to... I agree it doesn't need replaced nearly as often and my experience with it... braided line did not tend to coil/twist and have memory nearly as bad as any of the non-braided line types.  I quit using braid because in my opinion it is too rough on guides and rods unless you buy the right rod...

There are easy ways to get rid of line memory / coils / twist... if you have a boat you can let all your line off and troll a weight or something for awhile... If you just leave non-braided line sitting on a spool long enough it will get really bad memory though.

Sorry I'm a little late with my comment but I've had great success with Berkley FireLine Crystal with a fluro leader.  Great sensitivity and no serious line management problems, even in moderate wind.

I'm surprised so many like the super lines on the ice.  What are you doing to keep it from freezing? And what about having to pull it out when its froze to the spool?  and what about way more ice on your guides? I use it too when I need the extra toughness but it is a pain most of the time.  I was fighting a 19lb laker and so much ice built up in my guides when the knot where the leader could not get through without some tense moments.  I guess it added to the fun.  For most ice fishing give me light extra limp mono.  If line is coming off the spool I just use my finger on the spool like the bail. ;D

Fill your spool on the reel to around an eight inch of the top and be sure you spool it off the same direction as your reel spool is turning and keep a little tension on the line while you fill the reel. Keep that reel super clean also.

I put turtle wax on the guides every day and wipe off, prevents freeze up!  Have not much problem with line freezing in spool, use 6lb fireline and comes out of the spool fairly easy.
