If you want to get rid of the problem all together, switch to bait casting reels. That's all I have used for years.Cheers!Houligan
ClearCreek,I use a bait caster for everything I can over a spinning reel on hard and soft water and have done so all my life. Actually my first reel was a bait caster. Ice fishing all I use is bait casting. I will use a spinning setup if casting really small baits or if the wind just gives me too much trouble on casting. Trolling there is no other way to go in my opinion.I generally use high end reels but have tried this year a really smooth basspro shop inexpensive casting reel for ice fishing. Figured had to try it and really like the smoothness. Went to order another and they are out of stock. I would not use it on soft water due to the number of casts I make and have learned not to use the cheep stuff, it wears out too fast. If I think of it I will get the make and model of this one. Right now its loaded in the truck for Keyhole in the morning.Matching the right setup on casting reels to the right bait in my opinion will help increase fish catches due to presentation and the retrieve is smoother over spinning tackle. Bottom line there is absolutely no line twist or spooling off when engaging the bail as in spinning tackle.Cheers!Houligan
I use a lot of fireline crystal in the summer months. Have used it ice fishing a fair bit as well. I have been really liking P-line copolomar in the 6# version for perch, trout and walleye. Seems plenty strong enough and I always use a swivel unless I am using a super small jig and want more action. As for falling off the spool, I have always seen that happen when there is too much line on the spool.
Depends on how you rig your baits. Using good swivels help tremendously coupled with how you fish a certain bait. Trolling to fast for any bait can twist line. If you don't put twists in it you won't have any. I'm talking line twist, drop your bait to the ice or ground, when slack, drop the rod tip toward the bait, does the line automatically twist in a loop? If I see this I am doing something wrong.A good braided line more than likely will not need to be changed a few times a year. Probably is a good idea to change any line when its bad.
