Any news from Mauston?
« on: Nov 28, 2013, 09:42 PM »
I am wondering if anyone has fished or checked out ice in Mauston. I like to hit the pond, backwaters at the old dump by Kmart above the dam, but not sure if it is closed up and solid yet. I plan on heading there Saturday morning. If anyone has news please reply. Thanks.

Went yesterday, 4+ inches of ice, several guys out there. I went light, a couple jig poles for panfish. Unfortunately I took a knife to a gun fight, panfish were not biting, but bass were pounding the tip ups. I counted over 30 flags in 2.5 hours before I gave up and went home. Saw some really nice bass caught, next time I will remember to bring tipups. Was good to feel the ice under my feet.

Been a couple years since I got up there, it is about an hour drive for me. Usually the gills are pretty thick keeping about 1 in 4. After a few weeks it gets more like keeping 1 in 10. Also a few perch and crappies. There are some walleye now with locals releasing fry, there is a slot limit 20-28" you have to return. There are also some Northern with some pretty nice ones caught. I only fish it the first couple weeks and then fish closer to home.
