I saw a post on carp not long ago in one of the other state forums. Sorry, I can't remember which one. The biggest problem once they found a school of fish was getting them through the hole.  :o I also believe they fish for them in Europe, maybe see if you can find one of their websites.

I have a hard time believing they feed heavy in the winter though, they are such slothly fish even when it's warm. On par with an engorged tick. If the pond is shallow, you could set up a darkhouse and spear some!!! Now that would be fun.

Try using a kernal or two of sweet corn on a number 4 or 6 hook right on the bottom. Chum the holes with sweet corn and bread. When you get a flag bring your auger because you'll have a hard time getting anything over 20lbs through and 8" hole, anything with a 25"+ girth won't fit. Also make sure you have thick tipup line so you don't cut your hands because contrary to what eiderz said they do feed in the winter and they aren't slothy at all, especially when you hook them.

Sorry to have insulted such a highly sought after gamefish, I should have put this emoticon in my post. :roflmao: :roflmao: Heck, before I started icefishing I never thought I would get a kick out of catching a bunch of dink perch, but through an 8" hole a minnow is a blast. They are all good fun.

Interesting that you have caught them through the ice. How big are the largest you've caught? The big ones around here are roughly 30 lbers, but the ones I have seen taken were mostly shot with bow & arrows in shallow tidal water.

I know you were joking, but they actually are a sought after gamefish, especially in Europe. Carp fishing is a multi billion dollar industry there, it's like bass fishing here. Carp fishing is growing in popularity fast in the US too. I've caught ove 20 30lb+ fish and my big was 53.12. Don't ask where I fish, I have no interest in giving information about locations to bowfisherman.

I have heard about the carp fishing in Europe, which is why I suggested a European website to the OP. I've also seen it on tv, sometimes they fish the canals/rivers with our equivalent of a cane pole. An interesting aspect of European fishing (as I understand it) is that in some countries it is illegal to release a fish, it is considered animal cruelty.

Don't worry, you'll get no location questions from me! Never shot one myself. While duck hunting, I've picked a couple up when they were stuck in the mud at low tide and carried them to open water. My humanitarian gestures to the carp family.  Love watching them breach in the decoys, some have a head as big as my dog.

BTW, 53 lbs is stout, really stout. Not through the ice?? :o :o Get a chainsaw!!! I am ashamed to admit I haven't caught a 53 lb striper and I've been doing it my entire life. And my hair is all gray. :)

cant believe people fly fish for those things.
Fishing is a sport in which thinking is involved it is the covenant between nature and man, mother and son. Through fishing only can we recreate the link that has been tarnished throughout the existence of the modern era of mankind. Fishing is the answer yet people ignore it and consider it a "stupid" thing to do. What do these people do instead? They stare in front of color changing boxes. Is that life? My life is fishin

I have been talking to the guy who runs CT fishing Adventures. I would like to try an ice fishing tour with him for carp this winter. He is a member of this site, not sure how much he still comes on here but i know he has gotten clients to come from outside the US to fish for carp with him. He is an expert when it comes to catching big carp I accompanied him a few weeks ago on a trip and we saw 3 pigs landed while we were there and many were caught before and after we were there over the 25lb range. He knows his carp!

We catch them occasionally while ice fishing for walleye and perch.  They will hit a Jigging Rap with wax worms on the treble hook. They do fight hard through the ice.

I have never caught or seen them caught through the ice but I have caught them using dough balls in the mid summer and I would imagine they would be a hand full as they can peel some line once they know their hooked, I have seen them caught on flies on a northern Michigan lake on the flats while guys were sight fishing for them and were hooking up quite often.

I am here to tell ya, catchin carp thru the ice, espically on a light rod with 2lb line. Some of the best 30 mins of your fishin life.

22lbs and big enough to get stuck with 2 6 inch holes drilled.

Right on Smitty! After freezing my butt off for nothing as a kid, I never thought I would enjoy it as much as I do. Then some knuckleheads from my office "forced" me to go again five or six years ago. Now I look forward to it all year.

p.s. Carp are still ugly, lowly and slothly. :roflmao:

nice pics. Playing them on medium action rod is a hoot , Like hooking a fraight train. Can just imagine hooking one on a jigging rod
