just how DO you go about finding your opening day spot...obviously if ice is a limiting factor then you go where there IS ice.  On a good year (one with plenty of ice) what determines where you put your opening day spread???

Personally we have somewhat of an opening day tradition, we go to a pond with very little pressure and do quite well!  :D

i have no tradition other than chasing trouties on opening day. i try not to go to places that get swamped . i guess just see where the ice is and where friends are going and take it from there.

Headed far north 3 yrs ago because it was a sure bet for ice on a salmon/trout lake whereas Bangor area gamefish lakes had little or no ice.  Now its a given---GO NORTH to that lake which shall remain nameless.  No sense wondering if you are going to have ice down here when they have 4-6 inches up where its cold.

Previous to that I spent some opening days wasting time driving from place to place and not daring to walk to the part of the lake where the fish were. I want to be ON THE ICE not driving around.  That only works for hunting.

usually head out with linguini and look for ice use to go to sabbathday for browns/brookies  but tried hiram/porter area for the past few yrs got skunked last 3 yrs so a change is in the works.....middle range pond keeps getting the best of me and might be in my sights that weekend too.

looks like we have the same idea.  the last few years ive been fishing sabbattus for nice browns and brookies.  last year  middle range spoiled me.  So im undecided.

now I know it's hard to tell a fall salmon from a brown.........but I KNOW you can't confuse a brookie with a pike unless you've had a couple stiff ones ;D
