Commercially made Smitty sled?
« on: Oct 13, 2013, 11:02 AM »
I've seen a number of homemade Smitty sleds on this site and have always been impressed by the craftsmanship & ingenuity Iceshanty members put into them.  It seems all of the Smitty sleds I've seen were homemade.  Now that my kids are grown & moved out I find myself fishing alone more often and would love to have something to make dragging out my 2 man Yukon little easier.  Sadly, I don't think I have the skills to produce something as nice so I started looking for a commercially made one; however, I can't seem to find one anywhere.  I've tried Ebay, Cabela's, Bass Pro, Clam, and a number of IceShanty sponsors without luck.  Does anyone sell one?

That is because the Smitty Sled is made by one of the members here on IS. He uses the handle of smitty0312.
I am sure someone lives close enough to you that could make one for you.

I knew that.  His sled was one that impressed me.  You would think an idea that good would become a big business opportunity that somebody would have jumped on already.
Maybe I'll just got for one afternoon in my garage.  I have some old skis already.  I don't care what it looks like so long as it works.

Smitty sleds are great.  I've built two and use them all the time even behind a snowmobile.  For what the inputs cost (old skis, scrap lumber, nuts n bolts) you could make, or mess up lol, several before equaling what a commercial would cost anyways.  I say take that afternoon and giver a shot, there are literally hundreds of users on here who could give you advice and there are thousands of posts to look at.

I just picked up the Ice Fishing magazine and saw ESKIMO has made a Smitty style sled. I can not find anything about it anywhere but looks really nice to pull behind a snowmobile

I am hoping to try and make something similar. If I cant I will be asking a friend to weld something like it for me.
