Berkley Vinyl Line
« on: Mar 11, 2013, 07:36 PM »
It seems like a great tip up line. Has anyone used it? It seems kin of like mono because of the vinyl.

I tried it on two tipups and don't care for it. It is very stiff and if you don't keep tension on the line when setting up or taking down it will fall off the spool. Going back to the old stuff next year.

I bought some of this crap for two of my tip ups and I can say don't waste the time or money. I could barely fit fit 25 yards of 25 lb line on my thermal tip up spools and was constantly having problems with it not wanting to stay on the spool. I ended up cutting it all off and going back to regular old 40 lb tip up line and couldn't be happier. I wouldn't recommend this line to anyone.

I got about 40 yards on compared to 59 yards being only halfway full.

It definitely cuts down on the yardage you can spool.

It has its applications. I use it successfully on my Windlass tippys with the exposed spools. The vinyl keeps the line from freezing to itself in nasty weather.

A quick wipe with silicone fly line cleaner/floatant keeps it easy to handle and shedding water to reduce freeze up even more. My challenge is tying a neat knot in the stuff. I'm split between leaving the vinyl or or stripping it off the Dacron core and tying that. Most of the time its a Palomar with the vinyl left on.....

I don't like it because it's stiff and after a year or two it will coil like mono will.  I'll stick with my Dacron braid since it never does that and I don't loose line capacity.

I tried it out and I think it works okay.
