Walleye and how they relate to structure?
« on: Feb 26, 2013, 06:32 AM »
How strong do walleye relate to structure? what im wondering are they wonders or do they hang tight to an area with structure? I know the perch and crappies around here just float in and out. I have heard 2 dif ways, they travel and also heard they relate strongly to structure and hold tight and ambush? if i found struccture and worked it all over would i have a better chance by working tight all over or are they there a bit and move off and come back through later like the pan fish? that way i dont waste my time on a specific area working it too much and can move on to another spot.  thanks!!

It all depends. In nature lakes walleye tend to be home bodies in reservoirs they seem to always be on the move. The key to walleyes is always food. Figure out what their eating then figure out how the food relates to the structure. I've seen video and photo's of walleye and sauger lying belly on the bottom and not moving and of them 10' and cruising. The more read, watch and learn the better the figuring out part gets. Time on the water is always the key.

I think appleye has it right. It does depend somewhat on the lake, however, all things being equal they like structure. It seems to me the smaller the lake the more they stay put in a small area. There are also times when they go cruising as well, I caught fish this weekend jigging in 40' of water and walter was suspended at 25'. This brings up another point, if you are jigging and want to see if there are fish in the area, rip the jig-stroke hard from rod tip on the ice to as high up as you can reach. Even if they aren't in a biting mood it may bring them in for a look. This last weekend it was the only way I could get a bite.
