Strange Happenings
« on: Feb 25, 2013, 09:53 PM »
Hello All   weirdest thing happened this past weekend   fishing on a pond that i have fished for thirty years.Oh well here goes    got 7 flags all were reels smoking like crazy   when i went to set the hook like normal i could not move whatever was attached like a snag on a log. Thought it was for the first two but 7 broke all but one leader 10 lb test my guess is snapping turtle but i would think that they are hibernating so lets hear some guesses I'm at a complete loss!!

Is it possible there are carp in the pond? They do travel and feed in schools.

I don't think a snapping turtle would make a reel scream  ???  sound's like a big pickerel, I have had em cut braid  in the summer.  Or someone's been doing some more pike stocking....

Could be a (distant) relative to "Champ"????

If the line is snapping off, not bitten off like pike and pickerel can do with their sharp teeth, then I'd agree with the otter theory.
It would have to be one heck of an active turtle to rip line off of your spool.

I had this happen to me a few times on a local lake. I think maybe it got pulled really fast along the bottom and may have gotten hung up in some rocks on the way back while pulling it in. I had a 10lb leader on as well and when I went to pull it in, it snapped and it was shredded. Just a theory but ya never know though, especially when the spool is screamin. ;D
