Best GPS
« on: Feb 18, 2013, 10:10 AM »
Was wondering what you guys thought would be my best option for a hand held GPS that would accept my navionics hotmaps card?

I personally think Garmin has the best handheld units....but I don't think your Navionics chip is going to be compatible with them.  Anybody know?

They never were compatible in the past, so I doubt they have changed it.

I'd go with a Garmin but like you guys said I don't think they are compatible. I see navionics teamed with Magellan but I don't know much about them.

I did some quick looking around and it looks like if garmin accepts any mapping chips it would be the lakemaster chips and not navionics.

I am pretty interested in trying the navionics app for my phone. Seen some talking about it on a thread the other day.

Can you save your gps position with an app?  I'd love to gps plot exact places i have fished before, maybe that software you are talking about does this?

I have an iphone with the navionics app, I have used it on lake erie, my home lakes, and also in canada, works just as well as the hand help gps unit.  When their is no cell signal the gps portion for the iphone kicks in.

Not to be an arse, but if you're looking for pin point and real time location, navonics app versus getting a Garman handheld is like checkers and chess. Is it a useful tool... yes, but nowhere near as accurate.  Humminbird is catching up to Garmin though, as they just sent to market a HD antenna for their fish locators, which gets rid of the donut when sitting in one spot (which is addressing twistedfishers concerns)!
I wish I was good at ice fishing!

I know what is NOT the best out there! Do not, under any circumstances buy anything in Lowrance's Endura line if you plan on using a Navionics chip! I have had mine for four years, don't use it for anything anymore. They never updated these units to display your waypoints or trail while you were looking at the map. They put in a "Map Viewer" that read the chip, but you have to exit that and go back to the regular gps page to see your trails and waypoints. Kinda defeats the purpose of having it. The old iFinders were great units, but right now if you want to read a Navionics or Lakemaster chip, DeLorme is the only one that does (UNLESS the Garmins have changed).
