belgrade Derby little drama
« on: Feb 17, 2013, 09:25 PM »
So hard day to fish! windy/cold/snowy not a big turnout @ the Derby! Here is the situation had a fisherman weight in a 20+ pound pike before the 2pm weight in time that was on the printed tickets and had a different guy with a 20+ pound pike but like 2 ounces less than the first one, the ticket reads weight in from 2pm to 5pm. by the way the first guy couldn't stay and took the fish with him not sure the situation with him hope it was justified ! the derby officials decided to allow the fish and he got first place. however i do understand the 2ND guys feelings he did what the tickets called for. heard many questions like was it same fish ? just weighed less later on! and if not should 2ND guy have won ? whats your take ?    ???

I did not attend but IMO...
1: They should not allow anybody at the scale before scheduled time.
2: Once a fish is on the board it should stay there till the end of day.

I can understand if someone had to weigh in early and the scales were ready, but that fish should have been available for all contestants to see, period, no excuses would satisfy me.

With the # of derby's there were this weekend, it's probably a safe bet that fish made it to another weigh in.

yep if you enter a fish it is to stay at the derby headquarters to avoid any questions.

If they are gonna mount it it should stay at the scales if not they should clip a fin and then I would have no problem with the person leaving with the fish

We host the weigh station for at least 3 Derby's per year,  first The Time is Official, if we say Derby starts at 6Am and a fish shows up at 5:59 am or even a minute after 6 am  , you were disqualified, obviously your fishing out of the time Zone. Secondly if a fish shows up after the ending time and your not in line waiting to be weighed, too bad so sad. This is tough at a Derby when a child shows up late because a Parent can't get there in time, its happen to us, we've rewarded the child but not by letting the fish on the Board. An incident yesterday for example, a child brought in a pickerel..1.11 lbs. third place had been on the board for a while, at the exact weight..1.11 lbs, First fish stayed there and won 3rd. place,.. we gave that other kid a prize too, but his fish did not go on board. All fish remain on board, tagged with your name and weight and if you want your fish,..after Derby or when it falls off the Board, there you go, your fish still has the tag on it and can be retrieved. A reason to keep the fish is to ensure that it has not been altered, weights can be shoved down the throat , bait, left in etc...we had a guy yesterday, steel leader hanging out we gave him pliers. If there was a close call and one fish just didn't look right we could cut it open and check the gut. that's some of the things we watch for and try to do to keep it fair.
