snowmobile insurance on the ice???
« on: Feb 20, 2013, 08:34 PM »
Curious if you can get a ticket on the ice for not having insurance on a snowmobile?  DMV doesnt require it when registering a sled, so I was confused about the law end of it.

Insurance Requirements
All snowmobiles operated on any part of a roadway or shoulder of a highway in New York State must be covered by minimum liability insurance.

New York State Parks law requires snowmobilers to carry liability coverage in the minimum amount of $10,000 for an accident involving one person, $20,000 for an accident involving two or more persons, and $5,000 for property damage from one accident.

Proof of insurance must be carried by the snowmobiler and must be displayed on request of any magistrate, law enforcement officer, or anyone who has suffered personal injury or property damage as a result of the snowmobiler's actions.

So, does that mean you have to carry insurance?  Or if you get in an accident you better have it.  Just confused I guess because I was under the impression that as soon as you hit the ice your insurance is void.

check your insurance, when I called for sled ins. I asked if the sled fell through the ice if it would be covered. The ins. lady called me back and said yes its covered under collision if driving and comp if it parked on the ice, then she said  I dont know why anybody would want to park a snowmobile on the ice, I said you have never met an ice fishermen have you? this is progressive insurance
