Lake Winnipeg east side
« on: Feb 13, 2013, 10:21 AM »
Blue Lund and I were out yesterday and once again skunked, lots on the flasher but no takers.  We had a heck of the time with the auger with the extension it got stuck.  We were concerned it would freeze in but got it out eventually can it freeze in?.  Any words of advice of what we could have done different?  We think we should have shovelled the snow away fist down to the ice.  Well here's to other people catching fish  ;)   :icefish:

Hate that when it happens. I've learned that when you are getting close to poking through frequently and quickly lift the auger part way out of the hole  to clear the ice chips. With less load on the auger it will not jam when it hits the softer ice just before breaking though.  Has worked for me for many years as I can't afford to get it stuck when I'm out by myself.

Gotta clean the flight out with an extension on or that snow mixes like concrete and will jam you up as you found out so reminder to anyone who is reading this clean the auger flight while drilling by just lifting it up and pulling snow out best thing to do is have your buddy with a square shovel to pull back the snow around the hole as you drill
A bad day of fishing is still better then a good day @ work!

and don't slam the auger on the ice when lowering it back into hole to continue cutting, bent blades don't cut!
