Replacing tip up flags??
« on: Jan 31, 2013, 12:13 PM »
Have any of you replaced tip up flag on your traps? Say a ht polar. The plastic flag gets all distorted from storage and I have reflectors on them. When it's cold you can't shape the flag straight. So I have trouble seeing them at night. Would felt work with hot glue gun?

How about a more pliable fabric AND reflective tape around the edges?
That way you have the best of both worlds!

I replaced the flags on a couple of older Beaver Dams last year. What I did was use my wife's pinking shears to cut 3"x 4" pieces out of a red tablecloth that I found at Wally World. Then using a hot glue gun put a bead of glue about 1/2" in of one of the 3" sides and fold it over and squeeze lightly. They turned out pretty much identical to the original square flags but better material.

duct tape from wally world.you can get in fluorescent orange, pink, black what ever color you like. just rip a piece about 4" put your flag wire about in the middle ON THE STICKY SIDE and fold the tape over on its self (sticky to sticky) there you go instant flag i've had some on for five or six years.

I've used colored vinyl, an old orange hunting vest (just the material, no reflector), felt and colored duct tape. Vinyl doesn't do extreme cold well, the vest material was kinda flimsy, the felt was cool but often times would blow with the wind so it was hard to see and the duct tape gets gummy with age and needs to be replaced every 2-3 years.

So what have I been using? I bought some thin foam sheet at the craft store, painted it black and fastened it to the tippy with some clear weatherproof plastic tape. Add a reflective stripe on the edge and it's good to go. I like a stiff flag so I can turn it "up" when the flag is down so I can see it and the reflector easily. It can also be turned so it's easy to see when it's up and won't flap out of sight in the wind (as cool as a flapping flag looks sometimes). I on my 5th year and they're still holding up. It looks like next season they may have to be redone.

As for attaching a cloth type flag, hot melt glue works well. Goodyear Pliobond is another extremely durable adhesive.

I've been cutting up a orange road flag and replacing the beat up ones. Mine are the plain jane free spooling tip ups and have a metal piece that comes off and holds the flag to the spring steel.

these are the flags i made from a hunters safety vest for $5 at walmart...easy to hot glue on...and they have the reflector tape already sewn on...
(Image removed from quote.)

Best idea I've seen yet.  Not as quick as folding over a couple of strips of duct tape, but the reflector does it for me.

Thanks,
Ted

If the folding and wrinkles really bother you and you don't mind a little effort to fasten them on you can do what I once did.  I cut flags out of an empty I gallon liquid Tide deturgent bottle (bright orange).  Fold over one edge and place it around the flag post then use a short aluminum pop rivit (with a back side washer) through the two layers of plastic. You will get a snug fit so it wont slide down.  These never get wet, rot or folded. They always stand straight out from the wire.  Mine have lasted about 20 years so far.

My spring project is going to be changing out a couple of flags with Hawaiian Hula girls.  I think it can be done.
