why do you guys use skis to carry your gear?
« on: Dec 01, 2012, 11:22 PM »
i am still trying to figure it out why people are putting those snow ski's on a pole and straping them to a perfectly good sled? are they pulling by hand or machine?  if by hand i have had better luck with my large soroc sports sled. i am planing to put two coolers in it one for gear the other for fish and they double as a seat. then i strap the shappell s3000 with wrachet straps to it. and i am done auger fit in between the coolers folded up. bait and every thing else is in the sled. measure it it will fit. also is it less resistance or some thing? last i looked mine does not have that much resistance cause i hand pull it just the soroc and the shanty.  use to pull one of those old minute men with a ply-wood floor but bought a newer shanty. the darn thing weight 120 pounds for a 3 man brief case and would dig in. now that i do it my way it work but with that old ply-wood one i can see why you want to use the ski's  ;D  btw soroc are a lot liek jet sleds i will have to get a pic up later of it

my sled pulls much easier with skis, pulled it once without skis in a couple inches of snow  it had alot of drag it glides along with skis.

Skis are way...way...way easier to pull.  I thought my suitcase was easy to pull, but then I made a smitty sled, and it is the way to go!  Now I load up the smitty sled and hand the rope to my eight year old...and it glides along easy breezy.  Make one you'll see!  Greatest mod ever...smitty is a genius!

Yeah, the smitty sled is way easier. where I fish I have to pull my sled up a long hill to get back to my truck. Talk about getting a workout. The smitty asked makes it 150 times easier. I had a guy on another forum tell me skis would be harder because you are putting all the weight on less surface. Well, less surface means less friction on snow. Guy don't know what he was talking about.

They pull easier because their is less surface to make fiction. For snow that's why you build them high.

Picking up two pairs of downhills within the hour.  Sometimes dragging the snow machine along is more pain than it's worth.  If it's less than a mile, I'll walk it.  The smitty sled ought to make that even easier.

Have been pulling a sled around all last season and I walk a mile or so out, it takes a while but I do not have a truck.  I am on sled 2.1 after the first design was too heavy and the skis busted.  Try pulling that out of the snow.  The next version was good except my buddy kept telling me to buy cross country skis.  They started to crack too.  I ended up buying downhill skis and it pulls like a dream.  I poor hot water on the skis and then run an old candle down them and they are waxed.  A tip, if your rope is frayed, replace it, it makes a huge difference.  I have an Eskimo auger, ice shack, propane tank, rods, tackle bag, heater and other assorted fishing gear.  It's heavy but pulls nice through thick snow and is more stable than a Pelican sled.  If you have little to no gear, then the Pelican sled may be ok.  I'm in Manitoba Canada, on Lake Winnipeg so I am pulling through thick snow and it only gets heavier when I am pulling it back with all those great Manitoba walleyes!  I'll post some pics when I take it out this weekend.

The best places to find old skis are Salvation Army and Goodwill stores. IMO

Changed my middle name to "You should have been here yesterday".         Remember it's called fishing, not catching.

its pretty simple.  put on a pair of skis and go down the hill.  afterwards, get in your sled or even a sled made for sledding and go down the same hill.  same weight, but you will fly down the hill with the skis faster.

Skis pull easier and you ware out the skis and not the bottom of your sled.

Your discription of loading your sled reminds me of the poor dog the grinch overloads at Christmas time.  Confirmed smitty sled believer for over a dozen years.

i use water skis. they ride up on the snow better than snow skis because they're wider

The narrower skis you can get away with the better. The amount of snow that you have to pack down is the issue.  Pulling your clam or jet sled is like pulling a snow shovel.  Think grandpa's cutter, the one horse sleigh.  They had narrow metal runners because they pull easier that way.  The carriage part was raised up high so it would ride over the snow.

narrow metal runners, carriage raised.  sounds like screwing the jet sled to a flexible flyer sled would be the way to go.
