About 3 or 4 years ago I remember fishing for perch on my home lake (Portage, in Manistee Co.) on April 6th.  Caught some decent perch.  I was out yesterday looking for perch on Portage with minimal success (only 5 over 8 inches).  There is still 16 solid inches of ice out there (quads and sleds running around all over), so I'm sure I will be hitting it in April this year as well.

Last year, when no one in So. Mich thought there was ice.  We had fishable ice in Genesee county (in certain spots), until April.

On the Mich/Ind line was between 1982 and I think 1986 somewhere in there I bought a new license and fished till around the 5th of April, buddy fished till 8th, I chickened out, was 6 in of ice but could scrape about 2" off with your foot!!

ice still looks fishable on my lake today in Allegan County,  I did not have a chance to get out this morning.

You were brave, last year we had our hottest march on record, with the tail end having several days in the mid to upper 80's, April last year I was on the boat on all my lakes.

last year I can remember being out in april would be 2011 or 2010, can't remember, tried going out today and my auger would put 10 inches of honeycombed ice out of the way in 5 or 6 spins, I guess I am done in Leelanau county.

I'm shooting for May 1 myself this year.  Anything after that will be gravy.  ;-) 

I do remember one year back in the early 90's of not being able to boat fish Portage Lake for the walleye opener (May 15) because of there still being ice on the lake.  Too bad it was unsafe for ice fishing though.

Last week in April for a couple of winters in SW Mich, but that was way back in the 70s. Can remember Spring break in HS, 50*, still 2' of ice and shallow Perch were as easy as it gets. C&R'd my best Largemouth on opening day of Bass in the late 80s, 25.25", skim ice around the reeds and 27* @ 8AM. Aluminum boats are much colder than a plastic bucket
