trout help please
« on: Sep 29, 2012, 04:34 PM »
please be patient with me every winter i take a bunch of kids from church ice fishing the lake we go to is stocked with 10 inch rainbow trout, and yes the kids have a ball catching them, but the lake also has some HUGE pike so i like to put out some tipups for them well in 3 years not a flag has flown and the kids think tipups dont work. so here is my plan im going to remove the heavy pike leaders and hooks from some of them and replace it with 10 foot of mono probly 6 pound test add a small circle hook and bait with salmon eggs if nothing else that should get a flag flying

4lb mono would be fine too, you could also bait with a crawler.

If it is legal out your way, I would take a couple of those 10 inch trout and put them on a pike set up... They are like candy to big predators!

I'm sure with all the planter trout in there that's why the pike are not takin your bait. Riggin the tipups for trout the way you explained should work just fine and if legal put a trout on the tipup for bait and you should get a pike no prob

RATHER THAN MONO ON THE TIPUPS USE SPIDER WIRE.  IT IS THIN AND IS MUCH STRONGER.  WE CATCH THE HECK OUT OF THE PIKE WITH IT.

Id use crawlers instead of eggs.  Probably a lot more natural.
