Painting auger flighting???
« on: Jan 26, 2013, 12:13 PM »
I've got a nice running Jiffy 30 with 10" auger that I picked up used two years ago.  Love it, cuts great, runs mint, what's not to like?  Well, I did get it for a song and it was sitting in some dudes crappy old shed for a few years when I picked it up.  The auger flighting has some of the paint off of it and surface rust on the metal.  It doesn't affect the function of the auger at all.

Anyways, if I wanted to paint it, what should I do?  Sand it and a few coats of rattle can black?  Have it sand blasted?  I just don't want to make it look nice only to have the new paint chip off and fall into the water.  I do have some POR15 but that might be overkill, haha.

I painted a lazer hand auger this year becasue it was full of rust. It was starting to hang up in the hole making it harder to drill. I hit it with a wire brush to knock off any more flakes of paint that were loose then roughed up any remaining paint with some very course sandpaper. I want to say 60 grit. I sprayed it down with rustoleum gray primer (2 coats) then 2 coats of rustoleum gloss black spray. I've drilled probably 60 holes since then have not had any paint come off. I wanted to hit it with a clear coat but the weather got cold and never got a chance before the ice was here.

Next year I'm going to paint my mora blaze orange so I can find it easily when fishing in the shantytowns.

i painted mine orange years ago just so i could see someone walking away with it in a crowd off jiffeys. was a good idea, it fell out of the sled when i was going in, noticed it gone when on the shore, looked back and saw a guy placing it inside his shanty. i could see if he was honest placing it against his shanty, but he was hiding it ??? paint it some stupid color. sandblasting would make it look new again but isnt essential

Couldnt wait until next year. Was warm today so I took advantage of it and painted my mora bright orange. I'll drill a hole with it tomorrow to see how it came out. I did not strip any paint, just roughed it up and did 3 coats of primer.

Paint will eventually peal and chip off.  Most of the companies are powder coating the bits, it looks just like paint but far more smoother and durable.  That's what I would do in some unique color so you know it's your's.  You could always do two different colors that way there's no doubt it's your's

I agree with painting it at least 2 different colors. Was fishing at a crowded lake and mine almost walked away !!! When I got home with it I painted mine about 4 different colors and the guys I fish with all laughed at it but I know mine from now on. A friend of mine said don't get so wound up about it. I keep good sharp blades on mine at all times and take very good care and don't jam it against the ice ever. Now I have a 6 inch Nils and it was taken to the paint shop also !!!!!!! STEVE

thanx for the advice, I think I'll paint it orange or maybe equipment yellow....they have some good colors at tractor supply!!  My auger already has my name and address in perm marker on the shroud, and a large bright orange pull cord handle from an old arctic cat so I can pull the cord with gloves on.
