took the drive to onota.
« on: Feb 02, 2010, 08:08 AM »
Was going to woods pond, but decided to hit onota lake in pittsfield. We set up in a bad location because of the blizzard like conditions in the morning. But we had a good day of jigging smelt. I don't know the exact number that we caught but it was a lot. I was using a kodiak jig tip with maggots. They are everywhere in that lake. We were fishing five reels off the bottom in forty five feet of water or so. We had one good pike run in four feet of water and I messed it up. And a couple other flags but nothing much to speak of. But I know the lay of the land up there now and saturday will return.

Kapt and I took a ride up to the tackle shop maybe 7 or 8 years ago just for something to do, but it was too early in the season for safe ice.

Glad to hear you whacked the smelt. That should make for some good flags. ;)

It's a great place to fish. Don't forget about the huge Salmon in there...
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

No one has had luck on the hogsback for smelt. And now that the water is up again at colebrook nobody is getting them there unless u go past the rest area on route 8 and on the right you will see trucks parked on the side of the road. Its called the goat path. Becuase its goes straight down the side of a huge hill. Thats where they have been getting them. The walk is brutal but could pay off.

The Goat Trail is before the rest stop and the old Logging Trail is passed the rest stop. If you go down the Logging trail now there is just a river there as the water is down still.

I went up to that area for a weekend last year, when we had no ice around here.  Fished at Pontoosuc hoping to get a tiger musky (used to be stocked) - not a lot of action but caught a few good sized pike and bass.  According to the locals up there Onota is the place to go for pike, salmon, and just about everything else.  Cool area though with two great ponds within five minutes of each other.
