Request Info on Allequash Lake near Boulder Junction
« on: Jan 22, 2013, 02:24 PM »
I live in the far Western U.P. (Ironwood) and am interested in fishing Allequash Lake near Boulder Junction, WI this coming weekend for Blue Gill.  Would be most appreciative of information on location and tecnique for bigger gills, as I have never fished this lake (but have read favorable reviews). Have been doing very well for Perch on Chequamegon Bay in Ashland, on Lake Superior for Yellow Perch-looking to do something else this weekend for a change. Thanks for your input.

I summer fish it about once a year. Why did you choose this lake?

from reading this online article. Seems like there are a number of lakes in this area, which is about an hour from me, which should produce nice bluegill.

I have not fished this lake in years.  I do remember people walking to the north to upper  and fishing the west end of the lake.  Seemed like every one fished the same area.  I have never been on the south end of the lake (Lower).  The bite was lsow when I was there.

That is a good article. I never iced fished the lake but you should be aware of a very large deep(er) weed bed just past the island to the left. It covers about 3/4 of that west end of the lake before it drops into deep water (not shown on the linked map). There are a number of deeper slots within the weed bed that might be easier to fish, the biggest one one lined up with the north of the island heading west. There is also an old road bed, heading north from the island. I caught nice perch bass gills rockbass and walleye on the edges. If you get into the crappies, hurry and catch them fast as they move on and never seem to come back. Oh, then there are some rocks in amongst the weed bed, but you are going to have to find those on your own! I would really like to know how you do if you go... Good luck!

I fish this lake a couple times a year. Listen to the advise Mr. Larson gave you he is right on. Find the deeper edges of the weed bed on the West side of the lake, where it drops off into deeper water and the deep holes in the weed bed and, you will find the fish. There are nice gills, crappies, and bass in Allequash, but from my experience there are definately better lakes in the area.

In your experience, what lakes would be superior in the area that would be worth visiting for bluegill? Thanks.
