It might not be the hook but your retrieval method.  When you get a flag do you set the hook right away or do you wait.  I usually set the hook right away.  I've fished with both types of hooks and treble has a better chance of catching but can be a pain to remove when fishing pike or Pickeral.

also when you are pulling the line in, keep your hands on the over the opposite side of the hole that the string is heading under the ice. If the fish hits the edge of the hole under the ice, it can cause the hook to pop out. By keeping your hands on the opposite side of the hole, it lessens the chance of this happening.

when you get to the flag, set the hook while its running and use trebles, 3 points are better than one!

When are you loosing the fish? At the hole or earlier?   Use a light hand.  Let the fish run but keep a little pressure on to tire him out.   Be ready for them to run when they get close to the hole.   let em run.  Dont try to force it.   It takes a while to bring in a big fish.

And remember, sometimes you do everything right and still loose them.

That's some experienced tip up fishing knowledge right there.  I agree on hitting the fish quickly as well as opposed to slowly finding tension.  Seems to me that a fish would be able to feel that, even just a small amount of tension could quickly change its mind.

Also I have changed up to trebles this past winter blood red size 10 and have noticed a huge difference in the number of hook sets I get off flags.   Today I tied up some flouro quick strike rigs to see what difference they make.  Anybody have an opinion on quick strike rigs vs a single treble?

On the other side of the argument there's a local guy though with videos on youtube (Aaron Peterson I believe his name is, he's more than likely a member here) that swears by circle hooks, he shows that with the right technique you can get a perfect corner mouth hook set with them.  So there's that.

size of bait, hook size and where you are hooking your bait is more likely to be the problem.  you need to try your best to match your hook size to your presentation, I dont run tip ups a whole lot but when i do i rarely if ever use anything bigger than #6 and 90% of the time its a #8 octopus style single hook (never been a big fan of trebles on traps).  Always hook bait infront of the dorsal.

I use trebble hooks and wait for the reel to slow down then set the hook. And when the fish runs i apply slight pressure to the line when it runs never lost a fish

I've always used treble hooks. Never tried a circle hook but thinking about it. Also I agree that the size should match up with the bait. I think I shall take a road trip and see what I can do to improve my catch as well. BTW I've always waited for the second run. I've also have slowly jigged the minnow on the retrieved if it was let go; sometimes pikes will come back and strike it.

...Oh honey I need to go to Gander Mountian This should go well!

This is my trick and I use it for everythiny sounds sill but I take the trebles and cut one of the hools off. Gives u one more hook to snag somthing on and removl is actually very easy if not easier to just roll the hooks out. My favorite application to this use is the swedish pimple. Its also nice to hook a minow that style too... hope I could help let me know how u make out.
Cacth them by day, fillet them by night.

When I used to tip-up fish, I switched to Circle Hooks. When the fish was taking spool, I would gently feather the line and then just apply pressure...corner of the mouth every time. You can't set the hook when using them though. Takes a little patience at first, but my hook up ratio was a lot better ;)

I usally go treble hooks just because there's more to hook up with. The more hooks the greater your chance.

#6 singles blood red, minnow hooked just under the front of dorsal fin, wait for what ever run is over when I get to my , remove from hole giving slack opposite side of the hole from run, slow retrieve till I feel it WHAMo! I do drop fish rarely but not enuff to worry about.  Just my opinion on the matter Good Luck

Augustwest:  "spot on" !! I have been using circle hooks for 20 years, I even use them on my tipdowns for perch. The hook appears too large for the bait (circle hooks need to be large) but the perch take them, just start bringing line in and as Augustwest states, corner of the mouth. Very rarely a deep hooked fish. On the pike and pickerel tip-ups, circle hooks and braided line, no steel leaders for me !! JTP

a #14 Mustad treble hood in front of the dorsal and it's rock and roll time. Use this for lakers and atlantics under the ice and also use the same set up out of my row boat on the resevoir for big browns. You would be amazed at how big a fish you can land on a small hook. Now go get ya some...

I like trebels for tip ups, although they are tough to get out of a pikes mouth sometimes

I use a quick strike rig with double ryder hooks. Get a flag, pick up the line, feel the fish, set the hook and 90+% of the time, land the fish. Most fish are hooked in the lips, if I don't put my tip up to far away. I also loose very little bait. You can find the hooks, but I also make them.
