Bacon Creek Ice
« on: Dec 14, 2012, 07:54 AM »
Bacon Creek was still locked up even after the 50 degree day Wednesday and all the south wind.  I actually stood on edge.  Only looks like an inch.  But it will start building.

Haven't ever fished there, and yet i'll be living less than 2 miles from it in less than a month  ;D
Don't think I can keep my flip over and gear inside my dorm though. Gonna have to haul it all the way from salix if i wanna go there lol.

Don't have any.  sorry.  All I can tell you is that I did stand on the very edge.  Not safe yet..........after tonight, it may be eaten through by the rain.

Bacon Creek is decent.  Lots of Rainbows and Gills.......and you can get into some decent crappie and bass at times as well.

What I've found is that for some reason that place seems to build ice fast, and keeps it.  I was on it all last winter even in 50+ degree weather and the ice was always between 5-8", where other places were open.  Has to be because it sits in a valley and the wind doesn't get to it much and direct sun is minimal.

the perch population is starting to build as well.

the rainbows can be had anywhere in the lake, where as the better crappie and gills are back in the channel.  the perch are usually near the opening area where the channel opens into the lake.  they were about 7-8 inches last winter.  maybe this winter they will have even more size??

Sounds like we may have enough to have an outing. I would like to get into the crappie and perch. Trout are like mosquitoes in that lake. They were supposed to die every year, so that is why they keep stocking them. But I don't think they are dying because they are everywhere in that lake.

I dropped by yesterday and there is only a few spots of open water around the edges. Mainly due to high winds I'm guessing. Ice was very cloudy. Probably from rain last week.

Anyone stop by today. Got down to zero last night

the ice fishing season of 2012-2013 has started on browns lake today. There were quite a few out with flip overs across from the dock by the reeds and where the lily pads usually are. Merry Christmas!

Hit Bacon from 1:30 - 4:00.

3.75" of ice

No bait due to closed bait shop, but still managed 10 trout on small spoons and small plastics.

What is strange is that they are near the bottom.  In the last couple years I've always found them in the top 5 FOW.  Good thing for flaher and a camera.  Finally got out in my new Clam Explorer.  Sweet.  Will be out pond hopping tomorrow.

itch has been temporarily scratched.

I hear ya.  normally i never find them in an area for too long, always zooming around like eyes.  I thought about going out this morning but I stayed up way too late last night playing with my new smartphone.  i might hit it next monday with a buddy or 2..... :)

crappies were hitting at the southwood conservation area on the east pond, in smithland today, on fire!  anything tipped with a waxie or spike was getting smoked.   big gills too!  west pond was alot of dinks, so stay in the basin of the east pond!

We were out at Southwood on Saturday, and some nice person directed us to the East Pond.  We forgot our, tent, flasher, gas auger, and Bait.  We had a 5" hand auger and Berkley Gulp wax worm bait.  In an hour and a half, we had 2 big sunfish, and 9 small bass.

We went to Bacon Creek on Sunday, and had some luck.  We tried the old creek bed in 22 feet of water, in the North End and had no luck on the perch.  So we went to the south side, by the stairs on the East side front parking lot, and caught some trout.  The Trout are along the edges, not so much out in the middle.
