Kids n tip ups?!?!
« on: Feb 01, 2013, 03:48 PM »
What's a good age for kids to have there own limit of tip ups? I live in New York n we r allowed 5 n 3 hand lines. Is there a legal age? Looked on DEC website but found nothing!!

Depends on the kid.  As soon as they can handle them.  In CT, they are allowed two lines.  Usually do one tip up and one jigger.
If you can't play nice, get off the ice!

Do not know about ny but generally there is no set age, if the kid can demonstrate that he can set and use it he's ok to have his own lines.

As long as he/she can do all the work themselves and tend to them they can have their own. Otherwise they count on your limit.

i agree with the fact the kid should be able to handle the lines themselves ..... here in wisconsin we are allowed 3 lines my kids are 5 and 8 i  put in their three a piece and none for me .... i just help them with theirs so we are covered

I started mine out at about 7 years old with his own traps. First taught him how to set the hook and bring them in at 5 years old. I worked with him for the first 2 years on how to set them up and why we put them where we would. Now he's 27 years old and fishes more than I do. He has become a very good ice fisherman and spends a lot of time fishing the lake that he now lives on.

Then again he had a great teacher.  ;D ;D ;D

I started my boy at 5. He didnt start tending them fully to age 7. Weve been checked every season  by the DEC and they never said anything. Was i technically breaking the law? Yeah, but it helped to build my sons love of the outdoors and I'd gladly take a ticket for it. Also i didnt ever go above  my personal creel limit. I would get your kid there own tipups and get them on the ixe as soon as possible

Started my 2 girls at 5and  at 7 they had their own tip ups and I would drill and clean holes and they would follow setting tip ups mine included. They new what depth to set them for the different species. They are now 16 and 18 the 18yr old still loves to go and the 16yr old goes but not as much. The older daughter actually has a bet with one of my friends every year as to who will catch the biggest pike.
