Prob about the size for a dress shirt.   I personally don't like buttons bc they are hard to move up and down when the lines frozen or fingers are cold. I move  a lot so having to move a button is a pain,  I tried bobber line markers and didn't like them as they would float the line off the spool or get snagged on the bottom of the Ice.  I use split shot now.  I can easily put them off and on with just my mouth leaving my hands free.  These are lead free split shot,  I give  them a shot of fluorescent paint so they are visible in the hole when checking traps to see how far a fish ran when a flag goes up.  I fish for brookies mostly so they'll hit and run a few feet and stop.

For me it's a high visibility 5mm bead (hot pink or chartreuse is great) above a slip bobber knot. The knot moves easily and the bead is easily seen. Simple and easy............

I always used the mini bobbers too, but was told if I  use them it is no longer a tip up, and now a hand line.  Don't know for sure in NY???

I have tries most everything and in the end I like these the best;

3 seasons of using them and would never go back to buttons, loop knots, little bobbers (they float up, fowling on the tip up and get caught on the ice), rubber bands, stoppers or any of the other things I have tried...

I use pieces of rubber band. Slides easily up and down the line, cheap you can have several on one tipup for different depths. They are cheap and you can keep extra in a zip lock bag in your pocket.

I currently use mini bobbers ,tied buttons and something called poultry leg marker. The poultry marker is basically a plastic split ring slip on your line then wrap line around marker a few times.
