They are a little heavy.  Sometimes getting the hose on the propane tank at the beginning of the day is a pain in the neck.  Other than that they are amazing.  Spendy but i think they offer enough advantages to make it worth the cost.

I have read a few reviews where people got bad ones that leaked oil, but it sounds they were taken care of. I wouldn't lose any sleep over that issue at this point.

Sorry but I don't understand what you mean ... ??? The propane 1 lb'er can stay attached all the time, and only needs to be removed and replaced when empty.

No buyers remorse after two seasons. Unscrew bottle at the end of the day or it has potential to be empty the next trip out. :%$#!:

OK that makes sense, but I'm sure my father hasn't had any issue with propane leaks. Thanks for the clarification. ;D

I occasionally unscrew the bottle when not in use, but sometimes I leave it hooked up and the tank has never drained. I think it is a good idea to leave it hooked up from time to time and after a day check if the canister is empty. If it empties on its' own you have a bigger problem than an empty bottle... you have an auger that leaks fuel in a vapor form that is hard to smell. Just my thoughts.

funny moment just occured....I kinda bought this beast (PRO4-Propane) "under the radar" 3 seasons ago and keep it stored deep in the fishing closet off season. I had it out today to change the oil and the wife zeroed right in on it.  :woot:

"IS THAT NEW??????!!!!!!".....was the question...........utt ohhhh.

"No honey....I bought that 3 years ago.....you've seen it...."

"HOW MUCH WAS THAT???

"I dunno, it was 3 years ago....." ;)2

"WELL IT LOOKS NEW TO ME!!!!!"

hmmmmmmm

Moral of he story......propane is clean......waaaaaaaaay too clean.

I better hide the 5.6 showdown and the arctic float suit I bought 5 years ago....

What I had was a grown man (myself) throwing a major temper tantrum on a lake in the middle of west Egypt! You are right about the leaking gas though... Scary. If a guy is trying to quit smoking, maybe he should have a Pro 4 to help BLOW the habit.

I bought one about 3 years ago. I wanted no part of gas in my car, fumes, etc. This was the auger for me. We got it after I returned the Electra from Strikemaster. It just didn't drill enough holes for what I needed. lFine you have a perm, and ony drill 8 holes, but I wanted 15-30 holes drilled at least. The thing died after 12-15.

So about 5 weeks in the fuel line was leaking on the pro4. I called Jiffy, they were very nice. Told me to take it to any local place that could service 4 stroke engines. They covered everything, took about 5 days total. Once the parts arrived it only took a few hours. So not all that bad or expected on the rookie model, but still a hassle. Had I been on a trip and paid $520 for reliability in my auger and had failure I'm sure I would have been more upet.   *They have since fixed this issue with newer models I believe.

Since then, no issues at all. I get plenty of holes out of 1lb tanks that I have to buy anyway for my heater. I have had easy 60 holes, but then just stop counting because it's plenty. I have the 10". Starts like a dream, never had issues in below zero temps.

Now, I like to cut lots of holes, so a 10" is probably my first mistake. Unnecessary weight and time in drilling lots of holes. The auger is heavy. It's just way too big to move and cut 40 holes. You can do it, I have, but it's harder and heavier than it needs to be if hole hopping is your MO.

So, I bought an Ion. I have not used it yet. I still have the Propane Auger and it just needs new blades. I will keep it until the Ion passes its tests and performs like advertised.

So I guess in summary for any auger is just know what you are getting in an auger and match it exactly to what you do on the ice. Think about how you fish. What are your needs? 10" holes? 25 holes drilled? 50+? Weight? Do you walk out or drive? Gas/fumes vs clean? Reliability? etc.

For me I had light in teh Electra, but didnt get the amount of holes I needed. Then I overcompensated and went too heavy, but reliable. That said I think this propane Jiffy is perfect for people that drive out on the ice. Drill about 25 holes max per outing (Just to stay fresh, you can drill all day long). If that were my position I'd pick this over most gas Augers. I love it all except the weight.

I also have a girlfriend who likes to drill holes so that helped make the Ion an easier decsion with weight. ;D   40+lbs vs 22lbs.

Why?
....Because I can't can't Golf with Ice on the lake!
