Trick'n my Trap (Pic Heavy)
« on: Jan 06, 2013, 01:50 PM »
Put some thought into how i want to mod my new Clam Trapper

I found that two milk crates side by side fit perfectly.
The problem is, these mods have to accommodate my 6 jig rods and all this crap

Here is what ive come up with so far

Bolted the 4 milk crates together.

Cut notches across for rod holders. The rods are a hair lower than the top edge.

Next..See how it fits in the Clam!

Now to see how the lids will fit. I plan to trim these up to fit. Each side will open from the middle out with hinges on the outside edges.
I may cut both in half so each crate has its own cover. My wifey is making me two 13inx13in pads that will cover the front left and right lids to serve as a bench seat.

Left to do
Wrap the sides of the crates with a plastic shrink wrap to keep snow out.
Install no slip pad under the crates to keep them in place.
Install some reflectix on the back and top of the tent for thermal/condensation control.
Install lighting.
Some kind of auger mount.

nice Ideas you have.

I could not help but notice the Inlines you got there.  How many do you have I could not tell what the ones in the front of the sled.  are they the eagle claw ones or 13 fishing?  do you like them?

Im puting pads across the front. Imagine a 13in (milk crates are 13x13) wide by 26in across padded bench seat that slip in the middle.

For the reels, yes they are the eagle claws. And so far so good. Have had little to no trouble with any of them.

Maybe I will get one next year.  what time of year did you get yours?

Got mine a couple months ago.
I was the guy who tracked down who to contact at Eagle Claw to order direct for $15 and posted the info there.
They were sold out in a day.

Got my ice anchors in. They are ice screws.

Eye bolts in for the anchors, 2 on each side. Have 2 3ft pieces of rope with carabiners on each end. One clips to the eye hook, the other to the ice screw.

Wife made me a cover with an elastic pull string

Reflectix installed up back over the roof and to the pole before the door.

All folded back with the reflectix. Folds up nice, cant even see it.

Nice job very well done! I would recommend building a "Smitty" sled for it to get it up and off the snow. makes pulling it by hand effortless!!  ;D
Here is a pic of the one I built for my Kenai.

I had it out the other day and pulled thru about 8 in of snow and it floated on top pretty nice.
Ill see how it goes the next time out with the added weight of my mods.

But yah, will most likely need a smitty sled of some sort.

I think you will find that the milk crates, even with the pad, are too low to sit on for any length of time.

Ok I got the lids cut and stained/poly'd. Next step is to attach them to the crates and attach the seats to the lids.

The other fear i have is the 4 crates sliding around in the tub. There is a little wiggle room from side to side and front to back.
I dont want to put any bolts thru the bottom, incase im on ice with slush/water. Dont need any holes for water to get in thru.

Any ideas?

BB, if you are concerned about crates moving around you might try bracing them to the sides of the sled with some allthread or "L" brackets with the holes up high enough to not let water in.
Remember...just cuz you arent paranoid...doesn't mean they're not out to get ya!!

I'f you're totally against holes, even up high in the sled, what about putting down a thin layer of foam (maybe a 1/2" high or so) that has cutouts for the bottoms of the crates where you want them.  It would also have the added benefit of giving you a little bit more sound insulation when your fishing in the event that you drop stuff in your tub.

Try some pool noodle foam  zip  tied to the milk crates. Won't add weight and should do the trick.
