Hmmmm.... Even for pike my basic hook is much smaller than you guys are thinking. I use a single #10 treble (short shank, round bend, 4x strong) and have landed pike up to 44" with this hook/leader combo. I'll go to tandem #10s on a Q/S rig to cover larger live bait and use tandem #6s (same brand and specs) for dead bait presentations up to 14" (that's the bait length).Smaller strong hooks slip between teeth and grab flesh easily. Provided they are strong enough you can land very large fish on very small hooks. A reasonable amount of expertise is required; these are not "horse rigs" where you can hook 'em to the winch on your truck and reel 'em in. They are finesse rigs.Chalk my vote for 18 -20# uncoated wire with #10 (Eagle Claw L974 if you can find 'em or Mustad 3551 are OK) as a basic rig. Check it out and surprise yourself..........Just my opinions based on my experiences........... user mileage may vary./m
