ice fly
« on: Jan 05, 2013, 08:55 PM »
My friend ties a fly above the jignwaxy and he gets many fish on the fly. Does anyone else use flies and if so what kind of flies fork best and how do you rig them?

Make and use lots of flies like these.  They are great fished alone, no bait in water 10 feet or less.  They can be fished deeper too, but it takes a long time to get down there.  fishing them above a jig would be one way to go in deeper water.

I've tried flies before, but never had a ton of success! Although on a couple occasions the fly was working better than the jig! I always rig them 8 to 24 inches above the jig depending on depth! I usually rig a dry fly above a heavy jig! Dark colored flies on piss poor days! Sometimes the variety of equipment helps...... always keep a couple of flies with me! Haven't tried using them in a couple of years though!

Ive had really good luck with ice flies.  I also only fish them when I want them to go less than 10 feet deep because of the time it takes to get down.  I usually dont fish flies until mid-season when the bite gets tough.  Ive always had best luck on flies when fish are really pressured and everyone around you is getting few if any fish on jigs and bait.  Usually at 1st ice fish are aggressive and you can get them to hit alot of things.  Normally you dont catch quite as many fish with the flies but the ones you will get are usually always quality fish.

I like them a lot. Highly customizable. You can wrap lead wire on before to add weight. Use any hook size/type you want. I tend to like mine tied with the hook facing up. Plenty of simple styles that work. Made a wax worm one last year that worked all summer...have yet to try on ice.

Any particular fly work well or does it not matter? Also is a dry fly or a wet fly better forfishing above a jig?

I tie, and have taken some ideas from the diy section here, some of theses guys are artists. and some claim to like the nymph style fly , and I have been told some connect 2 to the line. , one at bottom, one on a dropper. Is kind of a sence of pride when you do catch something , evenif it is sort of ugly. I paint mine with acrylic paint, or nail polish, (dollar store), and kids have crazy colors for nail polish
