lights?
« on: Dec 19, 2012, 06:24 PM »
was wondering what everyone uses for lights in your hardside shacks? I am helping a buddy of mine finish up his and putting it out this year. I usually hit the ice when its still dark and want to plan a few late night adventures and maybe some overnight trips this year. I was initially thinking of running copper tubing and put up a lp lamp, but maybe I'll just by a couple lanterns to use. we have a woodstove for heat and to cook on, but I am thinking about making a shelf to put in a camper cooktop too. just wondering what I should do. thanks.

I am currently building a shack too "Building a new shack for 2013'. I am going to put 12 volt lights in mine. I just ordered some 12 volt LED lightsfrom amazon and they were pretty reasonable and use a lot less juice than regular 12v lights. If you dont care about the juice they use and more about cost, you can go to your local junkyard and pull out a couple interior car lights for practically nothing.

I use 12v RV fixtures and replaced the incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs which use far less current. The incandescent bulbs put out 104 lumen and the LED bulbs put out 340 llumen. A huge difference.

Which bulbs do you use Ice Dawg?  I swapped out my incandescent bulbs for LED but lost light.  I'd like brighter LED's.

Careful, you'll go blind with all that light. They are a bright white light almost like a flourescent white.

I just recieved from amazon a couple of days ago a 16.5' strand of waterproof 5050 LEDs. It was like 15$ plus i have prime so it was free 2day shipping. I can run the whole strand on the battery of my marcum with no issues. They can also be cut approx. every 3in. I ordered the quick connects too cause I didn't feel like soldering. They are bright too. They are bright white, but also came in warm white and every other color of the rainbow plus RGB strand for customizing your own color. But they cost more and required more wiring engineering to run off a 12v.

I use two regular light fixtures with the 23 watt florecent bulbs. When you first turn them on they take some time to heat up but once you give them a few minutes its really bright in there. I may switch the two bulbs to LED to cut down on power use but a car battery will run them all weekend long.

Last season i used 12volt leds off of a deep cycle marine battery. that worked really good for me. i had to charge the battery once the whole season. This season i had a 800watt generator given to me so now i have switched to 110. ;D now i can run a nice spot light for night fishing.

Well I got mine in the mail today and put them in and they are nice and bright. I hade troube because at first they would not work and I found out that they are sensitive to the direction of the curent so after rewiering my lght fixtures they work. So thanks ice dawg for telling us about them. I really like them.  :)

They do a good job for me too and don't put much drain on the battery.  :icefish:
