Jig with a chain and a hook
« on: Dec 27, 2012, 03:28 PM »
Has anyone ever heard of this Ice fishing bait with a chain and hook on the bottom? I heard the old men at the coffee shop talking about it over the lunch hour...

Hali Jigs, they are great for perch

at the IGLs they call them Pilkeys....also known as dropper spoons.  They are a great bait at times.  I have several of them

I don't see those chains holding up.  Are they pretty sturdy?

I always have one rigged and ready to go. One of the best lures out there.

They are a staple in my fleet as well. Started getting mine at Schucks's at the IGL's years back.

What's the point of the chain dropped down to the hooks? I would think you'd get more fish hitting the actual lure part more than you would get fish to hit the hook? I'd like to hear more on these, as I haven't seen these before. Do you use them for walleyes, primarily?

They are excellent perch baits but have done well with them on crappie and occasionally gills.  Have always wondered about chain breaking but have never experienced it.
and the lure is a attraction while the bait seals the deal on the hook chain gibes a little separation and more action to bait when jigged

Yeah, the chain will break if kinked then stressed.  And the hooks are kind of small for some applications.

I bought a few, then began making my own droppers with 8 lb. mono (a bit stiff is good) and #10 and #8 treble & single hooks.  You can also buy premade stingers and attach them to the bottom split ring of any jigging spoon.  Try it with an 1/8-oz. Buckshot, and you've got one of the best all-around setups going.
