Ok, I finally weighed my old Jiffy Model 30. 20 years old, the only thing that is not metal on it is the gas tank is plastic. I have a very good bathroom scale it came in at exactly 35 lbs. and it was almost out of gas.
I also have been eyeing the new Strikemaster Honda lite 35cc 4 stroke with 8" blade @ 23 LBS. That would shave 12 Lbs off my 55 year old arms and shoulders.

So there is the advertised weight and then the real weight? They advertise 28.7 Lbs.

Your old model Jiffy is a 3HP and made of all metal. It most likely is about 40 Plus pounds.
I base this on my friends Old Jiffy and my Eskimo Z51 with a 10" bit. His is an 8" and is far heavier then mine at 34 1/2 Pounds.

My friend just weighted his two times with 1/3 tank of gas in it. He said his scale is fairly accurate. It weighted both times at 41.4 Pounds. Yes those are some heavy duty old augers. My friend also wants to know if you want to sell your auger. He is interested in it. He lives in Northglenn.

If your auger started first or second pull every time there would be no need to haul around a hand crank. I've owned them all since 1965, Jiffy, Strikemaster, Ice Gator,
Bosch and Milwaukee powered Strikemaster and Nils bits, now a ION. I have serious reservations about the ION blades (made in China). We'll see when the water gets hard.
I do have adapters ready to go, ION / Nils, ION / Strikemaster Lazer and Strike-Lite. The Strikemaster Lazer hand auger goes right on the Ion.
Now for the best cutting bits: Nils @ 100, Strikemaster Lazer @ 95, Strikemaster Strike-Lite @93, all the rest are back-markers. Of course this is my opinion only.

From my perspective, auger weight is but one factor in evaluating a unit. I've been out on the ice....next to guys with whispy (and I'm sure super light weight) augers, and the thing runs and runs and runs.........and eventually.......they hit water!!!  I've seen......or make that..."heard" others out there with improperly tuned units, that sputter along for ever before hitting water. It would appear there are numerous factors that "make" a great auger. I'd like to see listed not only the overall weights of the units, but also the cc and advertised HP of each model. Wouldn't it be great to have one of each auger mfgrd. all in one spot and tested side by side at the same time????

I will say one thing about my old heavy Jiffy mod 30 with 8" auger, 3 hp. it goes through even the thickest of ice in a hurry with power to spare. I think the new light weight ones now days rely a lot on super sharp blades. Where my old 20 year old jiffy just rips through the ice, I have never sharpened it since I've owned it 20+ years.

My old jiffy model 30 weights 35 lbs. Just weighed it. Thought it was more.I say the same thing every year too. Need to lighten the load but to me it's really not worth getting a lighter one for the money and amount of weight your gonna lose. Only comes to 3 or 4 lbs. The old jiffy won't die, that's another reason i won't buy a new one.

If all of you that own those older heavy augers had the chance to use the newer technology I think you would change your thinking. You want the latest phone the best flasher the best snowsuit, rods, reels, jigs, heaters etc. Give the newer augers a try and you will put those older beast to rest. They just make your trip less painful.

That's what I mean, for a couple of pounds I won't bother, for 12 Lbs lighter I'm considering it.
For you young strong Bucks who don't care about the weight now, just remember these old jiffy's never die, and you will still be lugging them around when you are 60 years old. lol

How fast do we really need to drill through the Ice! The Strikemaster strikelite goes fast enough for me! If some of you guys have a heavy auger and a four wheeler and don't want to buy a new one! Have you seen the auger sidekick from augersidekick.com I bought one for my jiffy for when I would go tip up fishing because we are allowed to run 15 flags and with 3 friends and 1 auger that is a lot of holes! Now that i'm more into pan fish I bought the new Honda and it still fits on the sidekick for the few tip up trips that I do! ;)

Yep, but they can't make a blade that'll hold an edge in the conditions I fish.

The Tanaka, is a industrial / commercial grade engine, lightweight, fuel efficient, no plastic handles or parts to reduce weight. The auger, converts to hand use that's something that Jiffy, StrikeMaster, and Eskimo can't do.

if you can afford it ,this is the best auger Ive ever owned , and by far the lightest..
husqvarna..starts every time and you can lay it on the ground ,, and it'll keep running till
it runs out of gas..I'll go and weigh  the flight,to see how much to to add onto the
12.9 pounds that the motor and planetary drive weigh..

just weighed the flight at 8.1 pounds so total is 21 pounds
you could bring this down if you used the flight off of a strike light
there synthetic i believe, and i know the flights are relatively the same..

Jiffy chippers handle it okay, but you still need to carry a set or two.  There's quite a few lakes in I fish that have silt/sand ridden ice, doesn't stop us though ;D
