Eskimo z71 shark problems
« on: Dec 23, 2012, 09:54 AM »
We just bought a brand new 10" eskimo and we are on our 2nd one in 2 weeks. First off the handle shattered and now this morning we get out on the ice and the throttle cable breaks after 1/2 a hole. Anyone else having problems? Thanks!

I've had mine now for a few years. It's been running strong with no issues as of yet.

Looks like you got a lemon.  I have the Z51 and no issues so far.  Have had it for a year.  My friend has the Z71 and no problems for 2 years.  It seems like these things go in cycles.  Eskimo pop ups were bad last year but this year there are supposed to be better.  Now it looks like the augers are garbage this year.  The augers are really expensive this year and if it breaks right away, with 2 different ones, than it's a factory issue, maybe it's that batch.  Try one more time, third times a charm, after that either phone up Eskimo and complain, don't know where that will get you or buy a different model or make.  Sorry about the auger, I know there are great....when they work

Its unfortunate but likely a bad batch. I've got a 14 year old jiffy that at the and of the season lost about 6 teeth off the main gear after a couple of bolts fell in. I just wish the new augers were as well built. A little loctite on jiffs part would have saved me the $65 gear

Whist bought 71 this year and i love it so far I dropped it and had to replace filter cover but runs great... In Manitoba for Christmas it's minus 30 takes an extra pull and little to wa up but still very fast

They are ok... if you want to drill a few holes every time you go out... I am not super impressed with them.... Yes they start good and run good, but when you drill 100+ holes a day like I do it seems you can wear them out...  I am on my second one... Last season the compression valve you can depress for quick starting, started to leak... Probably after 3000 holes....  I noticed that the one that they replaced it with has started to do the same thing... Not impressed...... Won't be buying their product anymore...

I've got the Mako 43 and this it's third season. I drill at least 50 hole each outing (it's done easily over 1200 holes now) and have had zero problems with it. My father inlaw just bought a 51 this year and we have drilled about hundred holes with it and seems to be ok. The only problem with the 51 is that it seems to take awhile to warm up the gears on a cold day. Yesterday, it didn't want to turn to easily when first started. After about 20 or so seconds it started to turn normally.

I would say you are doing the right thing in trying another one. We weren't rough with it yesterday but we didn't baby it either and nothing broke in the cold weater.

I looked at updating my old Jiffy 75, but after seeing what is out there and all the plastic on these new Augers I stuck with my old gal and bought a new $40 blade and it's once again the champ I remember from years past.

I have a 98 my jiffy 30 series that still runs like a champ and has just one plastic part on the power head and that's the recoil. That auger has drilled at least 5000 holes in its life and won't soon be replaced

well if you update to a Tanaka, Husqy or Stihl you wont have any plastic at all! And what plastic you do have isn't going to wear out any time soon.
