Contour Maps
« on: Dec 20, 2012, 03:31 PM »
Just wondering what you all think are the best contour maps online? I know the DEC website has a quite a few of the bigger lakes and rivers. Does anyone know of any other sites that have a decent selection of maps. I would really like to get my hands on some more detailed maps for a certain local lake.

I wouldn't reccomend that guide i have one and there are a lot of lakes and bays in western and northern ny that are missing. Luckily I recieved as a gift. For $20+ i want every last waterbody in NY in it and thats not the case. At FLCC I had access to the ENCON's extensive collection of topo maps which was awesome. Theres a good topo website online I think its called Topozone I may be mistaken just do a search.

If you have a smart phone your money would be best spent purchasing the Navionics app

Goatskin:  Go to this site   http://www.adirondacklakessurvey.org/     and click on Historic ALS Data.  Adirondack Lakes and ponds are categorized by Pond Name, County, and Town and you can vary your search.  There are a ton of contour maps of Adirondack Lakes and ponds, though not all, and it is free.
Bear in mind a couple of things.  The data is old (especially regarding fish species) and the contour maps are not real accurate, but they are plenty good enough for fishing purposes.  Also, most Adirondack Lakes & ponds that contain trout are off limits for ice fishing.  The larger lakes are the general exception--you need to check the regs.  Couple these maps with the DEC stocking list and you are off to a good start in finding some good backcountry fishing.
