Lakes with trout in the central UP
« on: Nov 27, 2012, 05:25 PM »
My wife likes trout so I am looking for some lakes with either rainbows, brown or splake in them. I know the DNR plants Squaw, Ellen and Brocky lakes with fish and am wondering if anyone has any luck on them. I did go to Lake Ellen last winter once and we did alright there. I read somewhere that there is brown trout in Twin Lake which is on the way to Squaw lake and was going to try fishing there this fall, but didn't have the time. Has anyone had any luck fishing there?
Looks like we are having good weather  for making ice and hopefully we will be able to start fishing soon so any help with keeping the wife happy would be appreciated.

Your best bet is to log onto the DNR's fish planting site, I don't have the URL on this machine otherwise I would post it, and search by county, species and planting date.  That info should get you started in the right direction.

Thanks for all the info. I have looked at that and I am wondering how the fishing has been on Squaw and Twin Lakes in SW Marquette county. Reading on another forum it doesn't sound like in the summer the trout are easy to catch in Squaw like they use to be. Haven't heard much about Twin Lakes. These two lakes interest me since my folks have a camp not far from there. I have fished Lake Ellen in the summer trying to target trout and didn't have any luck. I will go back this winter again.

Twin has trout in it for sure. It is also a well kept secret around here. There are tons of perch too. Be careful there as it never freezes good. It is full of springs and very deep. You can walk back to the "second" lake, But never really catch much there.  Be careful and enjoy.   Steve

I wouldn't concentrate on lakes with browns because they are notoriously harder to catch then lakers, brookies, and splake.

Check the blue inland lake books for stocking trends, they are not up to date but they are a good place to start looking.

don't forget perch lake just east of republic, holds rainbow and splake i think, as well as getting an amount of brooder lakers every year.  there are some decent trout lakes west of crystal falls if you wanna travel as well!
