Pike setup?
« on: Dec 07, 2012, 06:09 PM »
I just started ice fishing a few years ago and didn't get out often then and I only went for panfish. Plan on going a lot more this year but I'm just wondering what do you guys in NEPA use for pike? Line, jig and rod action? Thanks

I have only got a couple of pike jigging and they all were while I was perch fishing in NY.

In Pa I have gotten a few but they were all on tip-ups baited with large wild golden shiners that I caught while jigging.

If you target them alone and only put down big baits you should use some sort bite proof leader at the least I would use heavy fluorocarbon.....  I usually make my own steel leaders or use the steel that you can tie knots with.

Out here i go a little over kill.   I use i think its a 50 or so pound steel leader tied to 50 pound (i think) dacron braid. A little over kill but oh well.  I then put big shiner or sucker down the hole on a tip up.  Never caught any pike jigging.

i use polar tipups with #35 lb dacron. on the end of that i tie good swivel. then i use either #50 flourocarbon or black steel leader. i use good #4 trebles. you mite wonder how a guy hooks a swivel to a swivel when using a steel leader.... i use those coastal snap locks(think thats name) to connect two together. makes for easy removal. and i use a split shot just big enough to keep bait down.

I also run tip-ups with quick strike rigs ( do a search and an abundance on info comes up) with live suckers, 6" to `6".
I get all sizes of pike on all sizes of bait. and i run both steel and mono.

I got lazy once and ran a single treble off a 15 lb test laker rod and was broke clean off before I could get to the flag.

Smelt work too, and I hear herring works but they are hard to come by here.  I catch a few jigging big spoons too, but tip ups seems to work best for me.
