how to lower temperature in your tank?
« on: Dec 01, 2012, 08:05 PM »
I put my tank in my basement at its around 19-20 celsius. how do you guys lower the temperature and maintain it the same?

I know if i add ice the temp will go down and then back up, this will cause stress on my baits.

Look into a used but still running chest freezer or a cheap new one. Put it on a timer to keep the water at the desired temp. I'm looking at a 7 cubic foot one on sale for $167 at Walmart right now.It looks like it will hold 40-50 gallons of water maybe a bit more.I would like a bigger one, but I don't have the room. With a $2.00 bait dealers license, the money I can save in bait costs will pay for the freezer in a very short time.

I leave my bait in the basement next to the bulkhead door.  It's not as cold as I'd like but I have no problems with the keeping.  On days when I'm going fishing the first thing I do is put bait in my bait bucket and then put it in my unheated mud room so they start cooling off.  Something I've tried is to fill gallon jugs with water and freeze them.  Once frozen, put them in the tank.  Get a couple more frozen and just change them out daily.

This isn't an easy or economical solution but is there any chance that you can run tubing under the snow in the yard?  About the only way it might even be feasible is if you could put your tank close to a window and run the in and out from the yard cooler through the window.  Still the costs for a larger pump and excess tubing would put the nix to it in my mind unless you're catching and using a ton of bait.  Plus, if anything ever gets clogged there could be a mess with the in excess of tank capacity of water flying around.

Alternatively, if you have an old fridge dedicated to either bait, beer or both, you could apply the same concept except route the cooling loop inside the fridge.
