Although it may be a smother ride on the ice, have you gone for ride down the road with the auger attached?  I wonder if the U bolts might rotate and there goes your auger.

Could you modify this so it is also attatched to that bottom guard.  If it was attatched at two points I would think the chances of it rotating would be eliminated.

I have them tight enough that I could sit on the pipes before I cut them off (185 lbs) and they would barely move, now with them at the length they are I can darn near lift the front of the ATV up without them moving. But I do plan on keeping a good eye on them for my first trips out.

Just thinking this over again and I could easily drill a hole through the rack pipe and the bumper pipe and put a pin or bolt in there and it would not rotate for sure. I want to be able to loosen the pipes and rotate them up when I am not using it for ice fishing, I dont like the idea of having the jousting poles sticking out front. I'd probably end up with holes in our vehicles and house.  ;)

Ergonomically, the lower position of the mount is definitely a plus.

What kind of mounts with the pipe-type clamps in pic #3?

Bart all three are Kolpin, I think those 2 were called XL Rhino grips. I got them on clearance for $17.00 us. I could dig through the garbage and get the model number if you would like.

I drilled the holes and pinned the pipes so they can not rotate at all. I wont have to worry about it turning when I am out bouncing around now.

The holders are Kolpin Rhino Grip XL Rack/Handle Bar Mount - 21530

GF--I just added a front box this year and did something similar.  I ran 15" of 1/16" x 1" square aluminum tubing on each outside edge of my front rack.  It's fastened in two spots with U-bolts to the rack.  Then I ran 24" of 1/8" x 3/4" square aluminum tubing within this such that the extra was to the front.  The auger mount is mounted to the smaller inside tubing.  It's through pinned in the rear to keep everything in place and to minimize the rattling.  I made mine removeable (the receiving tube is flush with the front of my rack) as I will be traveling with a cover this year to minimize corrosive road goop on my ATV.  I simply pull the pin and remove the inner tube with the auger mount when it's covered.

GF--Here you go.  A couple of additional comments.  The thicker walled tube is the inner one the auger mounts are mounted to and the receiver tube (outer) is mounted to the outside edges of the rack.  Also, I gorilla glued an 1/16" x 3/4 L shaped aluminum (same length as inner tube) to the outside of the inner tube to help fill the little slop that existed between the outside of the inner and the inside of the outer.  In hindsight, this might not have been the best of ideas if water or snow freezes the tubes together.  Some slop will probably be desireable.  Anywho, I have more tubing to remake the inner tube if this ends up being the case and I need a smidge more room.  Another also, I needed to had 3/4" plywood decking for a spacer to get the box above the attachment bolts on the rack.   Here are the pics, it should all be fairly self explanatory.

Chris - I really like your setup, it is also nice and simple. I like the fact that it could be retracted into itself or removed easily when not in use. I'm going to take another look at my setup and maybe modify it to something more on the lines of what you have done. I really want to keep it at the height I have right now because I don't need to lift the auger very high to mount it, plus it places the extra weight lower for a more stable weight distribution. Thank you for posting the pictures.

Made some modifications for this winter, although the original setup worked well, I did end up with one of clamps breaking at the end of the season.

Thanks Bart

Next is a rack off the back to put my portable on so I don't have to drag it behind the atv.
